my office job had a snack machine and soda machine. every month people got to request/suggest something for it and they were pretty good about following through.
this was mid pandemic and quite a few people worked remote, so i kinda got most of the say on what we stocked, and i had 4 rows of andy capp hot fries all to myself for those few months. i also got Mello Yello and Fresca in the soda machine. they don't really sell those things around here, but my boss would get the stock guys to do it.

I had this happen to me recently. I just moved and would buy hot fries regularly from the gas station near my place, they were always dense and crunchy like you remembered. But in my new city the hot fries are super airy and puffy with no bite, they were even physically larger with puffy ridges. The ones at my old place were slender and straight. I don't think they've changed I think they've just contracted out some of the manufacturing and some places don't do it exactly right.
