I live in one of the few areas these still exist and I don't know how the fuck they lost to subway
Even Jersey Mike's or firehouse doesn't stack up, and they're not even expensive.

What the actual hell went wrong?

Pretty much this. Starbucks won out over all the competitors that were 1/4-1/2 the price at the time for the same reason, then they all raised their prices to become "premium."

they had a buffalo chicken that was superb. if i recall their gimmick was slicing the shit in front of you, but it could have just been this particular location. either way way fucking better than subway and i think even back then it was cheaper

I don't think it had to do with the bread smell. It had everything to do with the fact it looks like a value brand Subway.
Maybe if they tried to make their logo and stores not look like a complete subway ripoff they might have been more successful.
Any time I see Jimmy Johns or Quiznos or any other sub place I think of their subs. Any time I see the Blimpee logo I just think of Subway.

So, I live next to one and a subway.

Blimpie is never on their game when I go. One time they didn't even have fucking bread. No joke. Takes 20 min just to make my fucking sandwich and I am the only one in line. A fucking joke is what they are. I don't even know if the salads are worth it the menu is so unclear.

Subway, on the other hand, especially the one near me, is almost always on point. 2 lines, pumping out subs left and right. Toasted? They have you. Not toasted? Not a problem. All the meats for options. The salad is a joke though, as is the pizza.

Given the above, it is very clear who I am going to when I need a quick sandwich in a lunch emergency.

Tip: the subway I go to is not run by niggers. I've been to subway run by niggers, service is markedly more shit and the same can be said for the food.

>Even Jersey Mike's or firehouse doesn't stack up, and they're not even expensive.

Subway beats the fuck out of all other sandwich shops because they have more options, meats, and combinations. I have 3 primary orders at subway, and two of which I can order as wraps or flatbread for variety. These are NOT a generic ham sandwich that I can make myself. I'm talking meatball, steak and cheese, and chicken teriyaki. All of these require cooking to make a sandwich.

Meanwhile, potbelly, firehouse, JM, JJ, or any other clone sucks ass because there is nothing I really like there besides cold cut type sandwiches I can make myself, usually better. Potbelly sandwiches are fucking tiny, I think people care more about the chips there than anything else. Subway thinks outside the cold cuts, all of these places are shackled to them.

Subway cookies are also fucking bomb. Even if you get em dry you can just nuke em for 30sec or less and they restore.

Don't get me wrong. When they offered brisket, it was the worst fucking brisket I have ever had. It would put a bbq joint out of business if they served that shit. So Subway is not above being retarded. But the point is they think outside cold cuts. They have chicken, tuna, rotisserie chicken, veggie shit, meatballs, bacon, steak, and a host of other stuff. Pretty much all the items for most common sandwiches except for fried food in poboys and barbecue exclusives.
