I use to go to Service Merchandise, Montgomery Wards and Woolworths for lunch the days I had to go to town and would last us till we got back home.

I miss those trips. Sometimes we'd do an overnight in town if we needed alot of supplies or other shopping. When we did overnights we always went to a bar and I remember there was so many people and lots of fancy wood everywhere, mirrors on the walls and ceilings, neon lights and I'd eat peanuts and coca-cola with grenadine in it.

Where are there even cafeterias anymore? I miss those days. Relatively cheap too. I am 62 now. Time sure flies.

You have some years on me, but I remember the little cafeterias in Wards and Kmart.... and the lunch counter at Woolworths. There was a five and dime store across the street from Woolworths. Because they can be seated have food made to order instead of lining up cafeteria style and pointing out what food you want, the lady taking it out of a pan and putting it on your plate and walking down the line, taking pre-made dessert and paying before finally sitting down.

Buffets and restaurants are still around. I don't see how they are sheltered somehow from those inconveniences any less than cafeterias. I mean, what about fast food? They are still around.

If I did a deep dive into it I bet the reason us changing preferences and the perceived benefit getting better quality fresher food and more service than cafeteria style.

I am not saying that what you are speaking of would not exasperate the problem of a cafeteria type restaurant it's just the cafeterias in my town mostly went away in the mid to late 80s and that was far before we had a large influx of illegals and minorities.

There are 300+ in Australia. Here it's owned by Wesfarmers, who also own Bunnings, the local Target group, Officeworks, and Priceline. They didn't run it into the ground, unlike what happened in the US.
