I'm mainly a whisky drinker who has wine on occasion. Merlot is an inoffensive dull grape suitable for perhaps college students or intermediate alcoholics who haven't graduated to Vodka or who don't have the money for any other wine. It's okay but not very distinguished. Cab Sav has much more complexity (though wine snobs make up a bunch of bullshit about wine's complexity when it's more simple than Whisky) and depth than merlot.

Merlot can express its self in so many different iterations. Drink some quality right bank Bordeaux and quality napa merlot and your appreciation will skyrocket dramatically for Merlot.

I literally don’t post in wine threads here because I get so triggered but I have to defend the varietal. The easiest explanation I can give, think Cabs feminine sibling with more chocolate notes.
