If you follow the SOPs (Standard Operating Procedure) correctly, wearing gloves absolutely reduces risk of foodborne illness. Do people always follow SOPs? Nope. They don't always follow them in relation to handwashing, either.

In large-scale food operations and food manufacturing, wearing gloves has been considered GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) for decades because it definitely reduces the risk of foodborne illness.

You can be happy about it or not. In most places handling RTE (Ready To Eat) foods with bare hands is a food code violation. All these reasons are why you see food service workers wearing gloves more often today. Not because "zoomers have a fetish" or any other reason. The ultimate goal of a food safety plan is to reduce the instances of food borne illness to less than 1 in a million, or 1 in 10 million, etc. There is always room for improvement and just because some lazy wagies don't follow the rules sometimes isn't a good reason why we should endeavor to enact policy that keeps people from getting sick.
