Irish whiskey is a fucking joke. If I want cheap whiskey that's good bourbon is the answer. If I want to treat myself scotch scotch is the answer Irish whiskey is more expensive than bourbon but about as good as a mid-range blended scotch. .

for cheap/readily available your option is probably heavily weighed in the Deaston Virgin Oak direction, but if you look for Independent bottlings or no age stated bottles you are likely to find something with higher abv/less filtration.

Glenlivet 12 Illicit Still is still hanging around in some places and is heavy on the virgin/first fill bourbon barrel.

Glenfiddich 14 American Oak is a US exclusive that seems to be available at most Total Wines, but it's a little lite on the abv and is more carefully presented.

Aged Rum can be overly oaky, but their age statements are basically bullshit as it can be either the oldest thing in the mix or the majority as the regulations provide lots of grey area for scummy tricks.

i bought an unnecessarily expensive titanium flask to take on walks in the city or nature trails. What decent whiskey/scotch or other liquor should I get for it to drink in nature or walking the city?

I dont mind spending a bit more since, I'll ration myself using the flask which is 4.5oz.

Feel like I'll get hate for this... but I'm planning now to get a Japanese whiskey $50-100, just trying to find a good imported one to not get cucked by custom import fees. Suntory toki or Mars Iwai seem to be the ones you can get at the normal price that people are recommending but there are a fuck ton in this price range that seem good and I don't want to waste $50 on something too sweet.

>> No.19061810

>>19061785
Japanese whisky gets hate because people associate enjoying anything from Japan with being a weeaboo. The real problem with Japanese whisky despite being good is it tends to be more expensive than other comparable whiskeys simply because Japan imports 90% of it's grain. Toki is okay, but nothing spectacular for the price. Hibiki Harmony was a solid choice when it was more widely available, but it's gone up from about $60 a few years ago to $100+ if you can even find it.

>> No.19061856

>>19061785
heard Mars Iwai was trash and that it's not real Jap whisky iirc. Toki is clean and sweet. I wouldnt put anything too good in it that would suck to lose.

something like Jameson Black Barrel would be good for a practice run. Irish is going to be your value option for cheap Jap-like taste even though a lot of Jap stuff is just Scotch that's been redistilled/rebarreled in Japan. although you wont get any smoke from peated barley in 98% of Irish spirits.

if you dont mind bourbon, Knob Creek 9 is a great balance of sweetness and oak spice and wont break the bank.

I did notice the japs really like making blends of imports, they fetishish irish whiskey for sure.. I remember having really good japanese whiskey when I was travelling once so I've had this idea in my head that there's some sleeper bottle for a decent price that no one else knows about.. idk maybe not the best whiskey I've had was all irish.

>> No.19061926

>>19061810
Yeah hibiki harmony would be want I want but it seems the import fee or something is making the price unreasonable and its hard to know what is worth it

this was one of the articles i was referencing, most of these names are familiar but its hard to know relative value when I could just get a known irish classic since I'm really not buying it to have a fancy bottle, it will all be hidden away in the flask.. desu i may give up on jap whiskey and just buy a $100 aged something

so far in the west, there is no sleeper bottle in the Jap category. it boils down to what you have available and what you can afford.

if you check the archive there's a picture that has of all genuine Jap stuff and its posers.

I know it's a whiskey thread but I think there's an overlap and I don't want to make a separate thread for it.

What do I get if I want to get into tequila? I don't want cheap mixers to make cocktails with, I want some reasonable quality bottles for sipping. Mezcal might even be more my style from what I've read about it, but I don't know what tequila and mezcal drinkers drink straight.

Thanks

I think the revelation that many Japanese whiskeys are rebranded scotch has harmed its image a lot. People wanted something produced in Japan, not just distributed by them.

100% agave only. Fortaleza brand is the Weller of tequila right now but there are many good tequilas out there. Now you know there are generally 4 types:

blanco- not aged or aged less than 2months
repasado- aged 2months>year
anejo- aged 1-3yr
extra anejo- 3+ yrs

Last night I made ranch water with Fifth Estate Ocho blanco and its also a good sipper. Personally I prefer Cazcanes Anejo to sip on. Cazcanes line is soo delicious especially the Joven.

Now for special occasions (extra anejo) you have Tears of Llorona, Tapatio Excelencia, Rey Sol, Cazcanes. I only tried the first two and they are wonderful. The Tears of Llorona is a blended tequila aged in casks of scotch, sherry, brandy.

also, stay away from all celebrity tequila. I've tried one mezcal and it does have smoke but if I want smoke then I prefer scotch.

shit selection doesnt really narrow down what you have access to. most of the bottles in that range will be from the big producers, so theres not doubt going to be overlap.

you will probably need to increase your budget to the $50-75 range to get something worth the effort. Wild Turkey Rare Breed(OG or Rye), Russell's Reserve(anything over the 10 yr or 6 yr Rye), Weller/Blantons/Eagle Rare (seems to be everywhere in Cali without being too marked up).

Beware of Shysters: if you get advice from a store owner/employee get them to back up any suggestions with a sample.

Costco has Eagle Rare for under $50 and occassionally some Weller's around. the E.H. Taylor/Elmer T. Lee/Weller(like the green label and another i cant remember) bottles regularly sit on shelves at retail all throughout the west coast.

Blantons does regularly get marked up but it's rare to see it much over $100 if you dont shop in stores run by Pajeets.

I've heard there are a few oasis spots in Vegas and Arizona that have allocated stuff getting dusty, but they are generally more expensive than Cali.

>>19065886
Old Overholt is soild stuff. If you've had Rittenhouse before try the Pikeville bottling. It's just Rittenhouse that's a little older than normal, but iirc its 45%.

Is it just my imagination / general jaded feeling or have Ardbeg 10 and Bowmore 12 really taken a dip in the last 4-5 years? They used to be fantastic, now they feel watered down and almost generic. Ardbeg 10 had this great earthyness to it, Bowmore 12 felt like it had a sherry cask influence....now Ardbeg barely has a generic lemony peat, whereas Bowmore feels like it's been aged in overused bourbon barrels...
