Has anyone else just completely checked out of fast food? And I don't mean 'haha yea now i get it once a week' I mean completely done. The prices have become so absurd that none of it's viable anymore. All my hobbies are cheaper than simply eating fast food. Same with diners. It costs me $250 for a sennheiser gaming headset from china, but Im supposed to pay 1/5 that for a fucking meal for two through doordash? excuse me?

Lately ive been eating couscous and greens + meat like bacon, sausage or tuna. Then Ill have canned fish and olives and cheese for dinner.

quality brioche buns are available everywhere now and it makes a huge difference, even more so than expensive meat. making the sauce with 2 parts mayo, 1 part ketchup and a little bit of mustard + spice only takes a minute so there's really no reason to buy soggy franchise burgers with tasteless mystery meat anymore, they just don't give a fuck

I'll get a pound of ground beef for $2.50, a fresh loaf of sesame seed italian bread for $1.50 (used to just be $1 but whatever it's good) and maybe some cheese if I'm out.
Heat up oven to 400, smash the hamburger down into a cookie sheet rectangle, season, bake for 10 minutes then broil, top with cheese. makes 8~ burgers depending on how big your bread is.

>The prices have become so absurd that none of it's viable anymore

I live in a low cost of living area and I've drastically cut down on my fast food over the past year. Fast food was great because it was cheap and because it was fast. Now it's not really any cheaper than a regular bar and grill, and due to "worker shortages" or the inability of fast food restaurants to pay higher wages, the food isn't even fast, it takes forever.

If I get fast food, I don't really treat it like fast food, I treat it like any other food from a restaurant. Basically, if I'm on a road trip driving over 200-300 miles, I'll stop and get fast food. That's about it.

Otherwise I only get fast food if it's more of a regional chain and I can get a full meal + drink that fills me up for less than $10. If it's more than 10 I won't even consider it unless I'm drunk. I actually went to taco bell for the first time in over 6 months last weekend...and it was 16 dollars and some cents. I just had a quesarito, cheesy gordita crunch, cheesy fiesta potatoes, and a regular taco. I used to be able to get that for barely 10 bucks, maybe 12, but 16? AND I have to wait 30+ minutes in line? No, fuck you taco bell

Only fast food places that are still worth it are Braum's, which isn't even in my area since I moved, and maybe Burger King due to the amount of coupons they still send out. Whataburger opened near me, and yeah it's decent, but what costs me 12-15 bucks at whataburger costs me 9 at Braums (double quarter pounder w cheese plus fries plus shake/malt). Otherwise I think Sonic is still an okay value, but it's sonic and it sucks

I never really liked fast food since I actually cook but at least it was cheap and I sympathized with people who wanted a bucket of goyslop for $5. Now that same bucket costs like $30 and there's absolutely no logical reason to buy this shit at all. Plus the wagies are more disgruntled than ever and you're seriously gambling with your life every time. Odds of eating floor cleaner or rat poison or whatever the fuck are beyond what I consider reasonable. If they eradicate the wagies, automate the stores completely, and bring the prices back to 'goyslop bucket' levels, then I'm back on board.

>> No.19053458

>>19052950
It was okay 4 or 5 years ago back when the prices were still reasonable and you could get a decent amount of goyslop for a fair price. Ever since covid these corporations realized that they can use 'muh supply chain mufugga' as an excuse to jack their prices up while somehow making their food even lower-quality than it was before. Even Taco Bell, who used to be the king of being able to get a feast of garbage food for cheap, isn't worth it outside of whatever their $5 (or more like $6 or $7 now) box is. They've even slashed the amount of shit on their 'value' menu by 50%

In no universe should I be paying $12 fucking dollars for a Big Mac combo. Even $6 would be pushing it. These fast food joints want Five Guys or Chipotle prices for McDonald's and Taco Bell quality

Every time I tried fast food it pretty much melted in my mouth and filled the stomach without feeling like I went through the process of eating something
I don't understand why would someone want that
You can get basic prepared food that tastes like food from any chain grocery store for much cheaper, so why the dissolving burgers exactly?

I can get fast food only at airports now, out of desperation and penny-pinching traveling. It's just not worth the hassle AT ALL anymore beyond that, paying $15 for the absolute shittiest quality meal after spending 20 minutes in a drive-thru line because some lard-ass decided to order a million things or can't decide, literally with no hyperbole every time. I've noticed this >>19053561 too it's fucking WEIRD even as a car diner. Going out to eat in general has become a trial itself, beyond fast food, food service across the board has dropped and if I do go out there's maybe three out of the hundred in my immediate area I've tried where I can trust the food will be par, the kitchen will not majorly fuck up, and/or the wait staff will not majorly fuck up. My cut-off is $6. Last time I went to the DMV, it was still pretty early when I left, so I went to the Jack Inna Box next door thinking I'd get some breakfast, but a basic breakfast sandwich starts at $6-7, and then they want you to pay like $3 for a drink, and you just know it's going to be a small portion that is full of sugar so you still feel hungry after eating it.

I bought a nice Dutch oven on sale 40% off and I normally make 4-5 saucy meals to keep on hand at all times because they replicate the cheese or grease you get from a fast food place well enough, and they're healthier. As a food delivery driver it sounds very similar to the 'doordash' system. They know when a doordash driver is approaching the building, based on the gps tracker system on the driver's phone. Sounds like they're now treating normal customers like you as a typical doordash driver. The same thing would have happened to a food delivery driver in that situation. You aren't 'present' at the store if your phone isn't present at the store, because the phone is god. A lot of it is based on corporate efficiency as well. Mcdonald's establishments/workers are tracked by micro management like drive thru completion and all kinds of shit. That's why they ask you "IS THAT IT??" when you're ordering in the drive thru.

Sometimes I crave a particular fast food. Sometimes you just need to waste $20 on a meal at five guys. Some places do have deals and options that do make sense. For example, mcdonalds has an app that you can re-install and abuse to get free mcnuggets (kind of a lot of work for junk though). And I believe you can use it to get $1 large iced coffees and other things for cheap.

You may think what you make at home is "better" than fast food but it definitely isn't the same and for whatever reason, lots of people want that specific taste or texture or whatever that they can only get at a McDonalds or Taco Bell. You may be an amazing cook, but I don't believe for a second you can replicate that seared bite or whatever.

There are a ton of people in the US who grew up poor and have fond, nostalgic memories of fast food. Between school provided lunches and poverty-tier dinners, it does stand out. Why do places like McDonald's or Taco Bell even exist? Nostalgia. The same reason every old brand exists, really.

>Has anyone else just completely checked out of fast food?

Yes, because of the expense. And it wasn't recently either, it was a long time ago. The meals I make for myself at home typically cost about $3.

It's actually been a really long time since fast food was both convenient and also cost effective. When I was in high school in the late 90's, you could get $0.29 hamburgers from McDonalds every Wednesday. That was a while ago and inflation yada yada, but it was still cheap even back then, cheaper than you could make burgers at home for. Lots of other normal menu items not on special at fast food places back then were comparable to what it would cost at home, as well. Fast food was seen largely as "poor people food" because of this. Nowadays it seems like a luxury.

I'm not a business major and I couldn't tell you why exactly, but it's sort of infuriating when these giant corporations inflate their prices faster than the cost of food. What causes it? Rising minimum wage? Greed? What do you think?

Add slow rude Zoomers to the mix, order wrong most of the time. cold, greasier, even lower quality ingredients, smaller portions, why go? I walk in to different chains all the time, but I end up walking out with nothing, Menus are even more limited with the same bland ingredients restacked (Taco Bell worst offender; some variation of tortilla hamburger meat & scarce cheese), no cool limited promo items like meme shakes and sauces, ambiance is no longer distinctive (Purple TacoBell; Cute McShits characters), add the offputting price and ghetto ass people you have to tolerate for however long understaffed zoomzooms take to throw their pubes into your goyslop bag.

But yeah, prices are pretty high, but you're going to end up spending 100-200$ on groceries regardless so it's unnecessary to compare it to headphones. My advice is to just spend your money on things you want.

In 2013-2014 I would go to taco bell like once a week and get the same order (crunchwrap supreme, cheesy gordita crunch, beefy 5-layer burrito) and the total always came to $6 and change. Checking my local taco bell now that same order would come out to $14 and change (incl. tax). I could understand $9-10 given inflation but more than double in under 10 years? Like other anons have said they've probably used covid as an excuse to jack up prices more than inflation because the bean counters figured they could get away with it with enough people willing to pay more or using the tracking apps for discounts.

It's been months since I've had fast food, although I've replaced that niche with frozen food from TJ's since I can still get an easy full meal for $5 that way.

Went through a period where I lived out of a rice cooker on lentils, rice, and steamed veggies all basically cooked at the same time, eventually felt better overall and upgraded my cook game to include more robust stuff. But anyway, I think between then and now the most fast food I've had is ice cream with family. I can't even fathom going back, but my brother LIVES out of domino's and Popeye's. I guess there's a mental hole you dig when you live like that and you can't get out, idk, but this dude will legit break his bank getting fast food, or just not eat. We live together and despite him being fatasfatass he'd rather just go hungry until he can get a box from Popeye's versus eating like, a curry dish. The wife and I still get cheeseburgers occasionally. We mostly cook at home, and have for years. That said, your prices seem pretty steep. I can't think of a fastfood place that costs more than $15-18 for both of us, except Panda Express or Chipotle. Let's take a look here:
>$50 for two
>at fast good
>through doordash
Oh, there's the idiot button. Gotcha.
You know if you take off the automatic 100% mark-up of using a delivery service and take your lazy ass out to get it, your average bill for two would drop to $25.

Yes. When I get off of work there are only 4 places nearby that are open: cvs, random gas stations, Taco Bell, and Rally's.
The taco bell has druggies as their late night employees, and I don't feel like paying $15 dollars for two cheese tortillas after I order a crunchwrap and wait for 20 minutes. The rallys has decided to automate the order-taker and now uses a bot through the speaker. The bot is incredibly slow; not because it can't understand spoken language but because it attempts to advertise random menu items after it logs every spoken item. The negros in the kitchen still get the order wrong.
I just want a burger after work sometimes. I stop at my normal gas station for a snack and to harass the cashier women before going home to eat a freezer meal instead now.

Now that I am not a neet I am finding myself eating out a bit more, but inflationary prices still make me balk and feel like I'm being an idiot. Fucking fries and a coke is 5 dollars at mcdonalds. I think it was 3 dollars pre-pandemic. And hey, I've gained the weight I lost at the start of the pandemic so clearly I am messing up there. The only thing I see myself wanting to order out with is pizza, since I can't reliably make that at home (or make it well). I've done it with fried chicken from chick-fil-a or mcdonalds spicy chicken sandwhich, but even with the cost of oil it'd be more productive to do it with my own chicken.

I can't fathom doing order in because they will shylock the fuck out of you. Think it's reaching a point where the extra fees cost half or more of what the actual meal costs.

I know what you're trying to say but I don't think you understand what I'm saying. I get that there are people who are so rich they don't need to consider prices, that's fine. It's more convenient for them to not worry about price. What I have an issue with is the phrase "it's a waste of my time, that time I lose is lost earning power". That part makes no sense because it's simply not true. They aren't missing out on any opportunity to earn because it's their free time, they aren't at work, and even if they didn't spend that time looking at prices they wouldn't have spent it making money.
This phrase only makes sense in certain contexts. Like if you spend 4 hours a night looking at stocks, only to gain $1000 a month in stock gains in an attempt to have some source of "passive" income. In that sense you can say you would be better off working those hours, because you're trying to earn money but the way you're doing it is inefficient.

One of the biggest problems with fast food prices beyond inflation is that they've stopped being treats that you get for the kids every now and again, because back in the day everyone knew damn well how unhealthy it was, but it was like getting ice cream - that is, not something to be done everyday. Nowadays, though, they've become a staple of the American "cuisine" and people, usually poor people, pretty much entirely rely on it for their dinners. You can even look at the way the buildings have changed over the years, they're all minimalist, sleek, "sophisticated" and that's because they're no longer perceived as fun junkfood to eat every once and a while. They want to be taken seriously because after decades, they've become a serious part of the American diet.

Every plastic leechs endocrinee disruptors, bpa free ones often even more and worse ones. Glass or stainless steel.

“Almost all plastics leach endocrine disrupting chemicals, BPA-free onces partly even more”
>Results: Almost all commercially available plastic products we sampled—independent of the type of resin, product, or retail source—leached chemicals having reliably detectable EA, including those advertised as BPA free. In some cases, BPA-free products released chemicals having more EA than did BPA-containing products.
>Conclusions: Many plastic products are mischaracterized as being EA free if extracted with only one solvent and not exposed to common-use stresses. However, we can identify existing compounds, or have developed, monomers, additives, or processing agents that have no detectable EA and have similar costs. Hence, our data suggest that EA-free plastic products exposed to common-use stresses and extracted by saline and ethanol solvents could be cost-effectively made on a commercial scale and thereby eliminate a potential health risk posed by most currently available plastic products that leach chemicals having EA into food products.
