Has anyone else just completely checked out of fast food? And I don't mean 'haha yea now i get it once a week' I mean completely done. The prices have become so absurd that none of it's viable anymore. All my hobbies are cheaper than simply eating fast food. Same with diners. It costs me $250 for a sennheiser gaming headset from china, but Im supposed to pay 1/5 that for a fucking meal for two through doordash? excuse me?

Lately ive been eating couscous and greens + meat like bacon, sausage or tuna. Then Ill have canned fish and olives and cheese for dinner.

quality brioche buns are available everywhere now and it makes a huge difference, even more so than expensive meat. making the sauce with 2 parts mayo, 1 part ketchup and a little bit of mustard + spice only takes a minute so there's really no reason to buy soggy franchise burgers with tasteless mystery meat anymore, they just don't give a fuck

The opposite. I'm just getting into fast food as a main source of fuel, rather than a rare treat. I try to balance it by only going to one place a day, but i'm allowed to eat at that location 2-3 times that day.
If it's something crazy good like mcdonalds breakfast, i'll just buy everything at once and microwave it as needed.

When I accidentally get up at 5 or 6 AM i'll drive to the walmart foodstore. Whoever works in the meat section is on top of their job because anything "going bad" is already marked down when the doors open, other places don't bother doing that until later in the morning.
I'll get a pound of ground beef for $2.50, a fresh loaf of sesame seed italian bread for $1.50 (used to just be $1 but whatever it's good) and maybe some cheese if I'm out.
Heat up oven to 400, smash the hamburger down into a cookie sheet rectangle, season, bake for 10 minutes then broil, top with cheese. makes 8~ burgers depending on how big your bread is.

I live in a low cost of living area and I've drastically cut down on my fast food over the past year. Fast food was great because it was cheap and because it was fast. Now it's not really any cheaper than a regular bar and grill, and due to "worker shortages" or the inability of fast food restaurants to pay higher wages, the food isn't even fast, it takes forever.

If I get fast food, I don't really treat it like fast food, I treat it like any other food from a restaurant. Basically, if I'm on a road trip driving over 200-300 miles, I'll stop and get fast food. That's about it.

Otherwise I only get fast food if it's more of a regional chain and I can get a full meal + drink that fills me up for less than $10. If it's more than 10 I won't even consider it unless I'm drunk. I actually went to taco bell for the first time in over 6 months last weekend...and it was 16 dollars and some cents. I just had a quesarito, cheesy gordita crunch, cheesy fiesta potatoes, and a regular taco. I used to be able to get that for barely 10 bucks, maybe 12, but 16? AND I have to wait 30+ minutes in line? No, fuck you taco bell

Only fast food places that are still worth it are Braum's, which isn't even in my area since I moved, and maybe Burger King due to the amount of coupons they still send out. Whataburger opened near me, and yeah it's decent, but what costs me 12-15 bucks at whataburger costs me 9 at Braums (double quarter pounder w cheese plus fries plus shake/malt). Otherwise I think Sonic is still an okay value, but it's sonic and it sucks

I never really liked fast food since I actually cook but at least it was cheap and I sympathized with people who wanted a bucket of goyslop for $5. Now that same bucket costs like $30 and there's absolutely no logical reason to buy this shit at all. Plus the wagies are more disgruntled than ever and you're seriously gambling with your life every time. Odds of eating floor cleaner or rat poison or whatever the fuck are beyond what I consider reasonable. Ever since covid these corporations realized that they can use 'muh supply chain mufugga' as an excuse to jack their prices up while somehow making their food even lower-quality than it was before. Even Taco Bell, who used to be the king of being able to get a feast of garbage food for cheap, isn't worth it outside of whatever their $5 (or more like $6 or $7 now) box is. They've even slashed the amount of shit on their 'value' menu by 50%

In no universe should I be paying $12 fucking dollars for a Big Mac combo. Even $6 would be pushing it. These fast food joints want Five Guys or Chipotle prices for McDonald's and Taco Bell quality

I can get fast food only at airports now, out of desperation and penny-pinching traveling. It's just not worth the hassle AT ALL anymore beyond that, paying $15 for the absolute shittiest quality meal after spending 20 minutes in a drive-thru line because some lard-ass decided to order a million things or can't decide, literally with no hyperbole every time. Last night my wife was craving in-n-out while I wanted a steak.
A burger and fries with no drink was 8.50.

My ribeye was 12, cooked to perfection with olive oil, rock salt, and minced garlic. My 'fries' were golden yukon potatoes garnished with shallots and parsnips fried with olive oil, garlic salt, and paprika. I was done cooking in 40 minutes. We spent longer driving to the restaurant and waiting in line and driving back.

She would rather have in-n-out over this. I'll never understand women.

My cut-off is $6. I only ever bother with McDonalds' dollar menu. Yes, it's goyslop. But at least it's priced close to where it should be priced.

I haven't jumped ship completely yet but it's very uncommon and I only do it when I'm heading home from work. Not only does it cost like $12 for a meal but no one is working the jobs so it takes longer to sit in line than to cook at home. Even my favorite mom and pop pizza joint has outrageous prices now. It cost me like $22 for a small pizza and cheese bread last week, it's nuts.

I bought a nice Dutch oven on sale 40% off and I normally make 4-5 saucy meals to keep on hand at all times because they replicate the cheese or grease you get from a fast food place well enough, and they're healthier. If they're pasta dishes I just wait to cook noodles until I'm ready to eat so they don't get soggy and wallah I beat the goyslop industry

The last time I had fast food was just a couple weeks ago from Sonic, and it was fucking $15 for a burger and some tots. As a food delivery driver it sounds very similar to the 'doordash' system. They know when a doordash driver is approaching the building, based on the gps tracker system on the driver's phone. Sounds like they're now treating normal customers like you as a typical doordash driver. The same thing would have happened to a food delivery driver in that situation. You aren't 'present' at the store if your phone isn't present at the store, because the phone is god. A lot of it is based on corporate efficiency as well. Mcdonald's establishments/workers are tracked by micro management like drive thru completion and all kinds of shit. That's why they ask you "IS THAT IT??" when you're ordering in the drive thru.

I'm almost there. I've got 4 kids and sometimes crap pops up where we don't have time to grab something at home... If it were just me, I would suck it up and just be hungry, but I don't want my kids to be hungry because of my crappy planning. Now I try to have grab-bags in the freezer for time like this. Simple field trip type lunch bags that will thaw out while we are out and they can eat in the car or wherever.

It's actually been a really long time since fast food was both convenient and also cost effective. When I was in high school in the late 90's, you could get $0.29 hamburgers from McDonalds every Wednesday. That was a while ago and inflation yada yada, but it was still cheap even back then, cheaper than you could make burgers at home for. Lots of other normal menu items not on special at fast food places back then were comparable to what it would cost at home, as well. Fast food was seen largely as "poor people food" because of this. Nowadays it seems like a luxury.

I'm not a business major and I couldn't tell you why exactly, but it's sort of infuriating when these giant corporations inflate their prices faster than the cost of food. What causes it? Rising minimum wage? Greed? What do you think?

A lot of newer restaurants are more of a "real food" chain these days. For example Sarku Japan, who gives you rice, vegetables and meat for the same price and 1 item on KFC, and you can split it up into two meals.

But yeah, prices are pretty high, but you're going to end up spending 100-200$ on groceries regardless so it's unnecessary to compare it to headphones. My advice is to just spend your money on things you want.

In 2013-2014 I would go to taco bell like once a week and get the same order (crunchwrap supreme, cheesy gordita crunch, beefy 5-layer burrito) and the total always came to $6 and change. Checking my local taco bell now that same order would come out to $14 and change (incl. tax). I could understand $9-10 given inflation but more than double in under 10 years? Like other anons have said they've probably used covid as an excuse to jack up prices more than inflation because the bean counters figured they could get away with it with enough people willing to pay more or using the tracking apps for discounts.

It's been months since I've had fast food, although I've replaced that niche with frozen food from TJ's since I can still get an easy full meal for $5 that way.

Yes. When I get off of work there are only 4 places nearby that are open: cvs, random gas stations, Taco Bell, and Rally's.
The taco bell has druggies as their late night employees, and I don't feel like paying $15 dollars for two cheese tortillas after I order a crunchwrap and wait for 20 minutes. The rallys has decided to automate the order-taker and now uses a bot through the speaker. I think it was 3 dollars pre-pandemic. And hey, I've gained the weight I lost at the start of the pandemic so clearly I am messing up there. The only thing I see myself wanting to order out with is pizza, since I can't reliably make that at home (or make it well). I've done it with fried chicken from chick-fil-a or mcdonalds spicy chicken sandwhich, but even with the cost of oil it'd be more productive to do it with my own chicken.

I can't fathom doing order in because they will shylock the fuck out of you. Think it's reaching a point where the extra fees cost half or more of what the actual meal costs.

It's more convenient for them to not worry about price. What I have an issue with is the phrase "it's a waste of my time, that time I lose is lost earning power". That part makes no sense because it's simply not true. They aren't missing out on any opportunity to earn because it's their free time, they aren't at work, and even if they didn't spend that time looking at prices they wouldn't have spent it making money.
This phrase only makes sense in certain contexts. Like if you spend 4 hours a night looking at stocks, only to gain $1000 a month in stock gains in an attempt to have some source of "passive" income. In that sense you can say you would be better off working those hours, because you're trying to earn money but the way you're doing it is inefficient.

Pretty much the reason why I don't order from pizza chains anymore. I used to have a serious addiction to Domino's Pizza (in the UK they are the best pizza chain). They weren't exactly cheap before, but now they've changed their deals so they're 50% more expensive and they even charge a delivery fee now.

Even delivery from shitty local takeaways is borderline too expensive. I find myself just buying a bunch of pizzas from the supermarket for 10% of the price.
