and THIS, is an Australian ADF military ration. Same year.
Why is China, purported to have one of the most developed and rich cuisines in the world, while also being a very rich country with a large emphasis on military spending, utterly mogged by the Australians?

Granted we are called the 'Lucky Country' for a reason, but this goes beyond Australian exceptionalism. Or does it? What culinary philosophy is on display here?

And then they move to western countries on visas because all western corps care about is getting robots who will work for pennies, which they will gladly do because they have no concept of what it is like to have value

If I was actually on a mission I wouldn’t want to have to heat shit up and use parts of my water source for gay drinks, I’d much rather have a bunch of different tasting protein and energy bars. Any other situation and they probably have some sort of intermediary chow hall set up with hot rations.

when chinese people get pushed too far they revolt. they're not being pushed at all though, they have a rapidly heightening quality of life. a 34 year old chinese guy I know says that the country now is completely different from when he was a kid, he watched it modernize in only a couple of decades. these are not revolt conditions, so don't be surprised when you don't see many revolutionary people. if they fall into the same pitfalls as the west has(which will almost certainly see revolutions within our lifetime so long as men can't secure wives/kids/property), then I don't doubt the people will start putting pressure on the government and the military will fractionalize like it always does in that situation historically.

I wish the MRE's I ate when I was in the US Army also came with oatmeal bars.
NOT granola bars. Like it would be nice if they could somehow make a somewhat dense bar out of quick oats that remained stable and could be eaten without choking on it.
No cooking, no heating, no nothing. Just unwrap, eat, and feel full.

On that note, I wonder why nobody has tried making something like a combo of soy sauce and tabasco.
I mean, sure, soy gets a huge negative rap on certain other forums, but it's not all bad. And anything that can make military food taste good or better is a good thing.
I remember how during my Navy days back in the 2000's, even when eating food made in the galley, I used to drown that crap in tabasco because it was either literally garbage that was dished out to us because the freezers were failing or the cooks just sucked at doing their jobs (or maybe the food was meant to be as disgusting as fucking possible).

China doesn't deploy its military. Like, at all. They have no real use for MREs since their troops stationed domestically can just eat at the base cafeteria. So they make MREs just to have them in case something happens with little regard for their actual usefulness or enjoyability. Contrast this with western armies like Australia and The US which both fucked around in Afghanistan for the last 20 years meaning they actually needed to use those combat rations relatively frequently so they put effort and resources into making them decent.

I recently ate one of the 24hr Russian ones and the salt content was insane. Was nice though, ate it across a cold snowy weekend and it was very hearty. I really liked the kasha mixed with pork in gravy.

This is actually a good demonstration of different wartime philosophy.
The last formal war between China and a western power was in Korea, wherein the PLA (under the guise of PVA) suffered massive setbacks due to logistical constraints. It's reasonable to assume that Seoul would still be BEST COREAN today if the Chinese had anything even resembling an actual modern logistics system.
What they had instead was a system wherein food that's easily transported and preserved (in this case, a form of pancakes) was mass produced in the former Manchurian provinces to the point of mobilization, then moved across the Yalu into BEST CORER.
The key requirements found during these days was that to maximize the individual infantry for longer durations of operation without a modern logistics infrastructure, the individual must be able to carry their own supplies - which, in the case of the PLA/PVA infantryman, was about 7 days worth (as was found out by Ridgway). This means every ounce carried by the soldier must be justified to squeeze additional value out of their logistics system.
What this means in terms of MRE design is that you want a light weight (meaning no liquids), high calories (starchy) item that's volume efficient (bars as opposed to pouches). That's how the Chinese MRE came to be.
The idea is that because they'll never match American logistics (as realistic an assumption as you'll ever see), every ounce and inch saved by the soldier further equalizes this imbalance.
The pursuit of war is not the pursuit of culinary excellence. It'd hardly fair to judge Russian war strategy by their chess pedigree.
