I plan on making Mapo Tofu with Sichuan peppercorns purchased off Amazon but should I also buy chili paste or can I use GoChefJohn paste instead?

One Christmas my mother got me sichuan pepper corns as a gift. I convinced my brother to eat one, and my mother got pretty pissed at me. I have no idea why. She was not emotionally stable at times.

Going to an asian supermarket is easier, but if you're going to order off amazon just get the mapo tofu sauce packets. It's not worth getting all the individual spice ingredients unless you're chinese or something.

No because Sichuan peppercorns don't taste like cloves despite the similar numbing sensation. They don't taste like black pepper either.

They're actually have a citrusy taste and smell. They are very fragrant after toasting/frying in oil. I find that lemon/citrus zest is usually the best substitute for it despite the lack of "spice"
