What are some American foods other than burgers, pizzas and fastfoods etc. ? Something that would surprise a foreigner like me who has never been there and views American food through a stereotypical lens.

Stuffed Green Peppers, Stuffed Cabbage, Twice Baked Potatoes, also the stereotype that eating out in America is gross/subpar/chemicals couldn't be more wrong. Check out Jets Pizza, Chipotle, a good Chinese restarurant. This response is largely being influenced by the amount of hate I see America get, me get who doesn't starve myself in the name of thinness, ect but yea. I got a 40 piece Mcnugget for like $9 through delivery the other day. Yes I had free delivery through a subscribtion service where you have to spend at least 12 and it cost $10 a year but I got like 3 mcdoubles and 40 nuggets for ~ $20 delivered I'm willing to say my one state (which is average sized) has so many more quality options then many other countries. I go to fill up on gas and have 130 drinks to choose from.

Here in the state of Delaware we have a unique dish called the Delaware Smash. You start with a giant communal bowl of raw ground beef. Then when the horn blows, everybody strips naked, and crawls over each other to grab fistfulls of raw ground beef. Punching is allowed in Eastern Delaware, and you're not allowed to punch a lady more than once. When the horn blows again, everyone starts running around with the raw ground beef in their hands, screaming "DELAWARE SMASH!" and whooping like Indians. The first man who falls down gets surrounded and attacked, raw ground beef stuffed into his mouth, by which point he's usually started crying. But crying is surprisingly contagious, and soon enough everyone is bawling, sitting on the floor naked, covered in raw ground beef, maybe eating a little if they still have any appetite. Then, an hour later, you do the same thing again! And that's a Delaware Smash.

The truest answer is Turkey. It's such an uncommonly eaten meat, without thanksgiving most Americans would hardly eat it themselves. It's a native bird. So I say baked turkey, stuffing, buttered corn, and a pumpkin pie are truly uniquely American foods.

I've made both of them myself, both with pork shoulder. Same cut.
>and judging visually from several vids online it does look drier. And the preps and cooking process is similar, of course the marinate is gonna be different.
Again, I've made both. Char siu is roasted in an oven at a relatively high temperature and periodically glazed. Proper pulled pork is smoked, or for people without a smoker it's usually done in a slow cooker. Either way pulled pork is cooked a long time at a low temperature. The prep is also nothing alike. You're a fool to mention marinade when only char siu is marinaded while a pork shoulder for pulled pork is given a dry rub.

This is always going to be a complicated question because everybody hates America and nobody wants to admit we have any culture, except when it turns out we do, so they claim it was actually the original immigrant culture and not ours, so we get nothing ha ha. But if this is a serious question, I might start with:
>New England lobster rolls
>Maryland crab cakes, and steamed crabs
>Pacific salmon
>A nice steakhouse, with a hearty potato side (potatoes being natively American)
>A really rich, heavy "Southern" meal with all the fixins' (naturally involving all the gravy, butter, cream sauces, etc)
>Texas chili with cornbread
>Tex-Mex generally, which can help to highlight corn, tomatoes, and other native American (New World) produce--as well at the spices, of course--while also adding novel US preparations:
https://www.twistedtaco.com/authentic-or-tex-mex
>A nice honest Midwestern-style casserole (which may not amaze you, except for its being hearty and filling, a real treat in subzero winters)
>A "Thanksgiving" turkey dinner

And yes, also burgers and pizza, which don't need to be fast food.

The ideal American burger doesn't come from McDonald's. The ideal burger is cooked at home over a charcoal grill in your huge backyard, while the sun sets and your kids play with the dog, and you reflect on your life while enjoying an expectedly bland but undoubtedly REFRESHING American adjunct lager. The entire concept of the burger is bound up with the so-called "American dream", the homestead ideal, the luxury of abundant meat and cheese, the leisure of lazy summer evenings, the enjoyment of family life, and the satisfied success of a man who has been able to attain a house and a piece of real property (land) in a country enjoying postwar abundance in a place of rich natural resources. Despite what "some people" would have you believe, pic related was real, and very American, and although it was never perfect, there were always shadows lurking, but we approached it more closely than many think, and it was great, and that's why we all become fat old truck driving boomers in the end.

I'm not saying this ideal image is entirely unique to Americans, but it found a special place here after the war, and we all know what pic related means. The home-cooked burger is a simple pleasure, usually eaten with few condiments, reminiscent of a simpler time, unsurprising since so many American immigrants were no-nonsense, hard-working "meat & potatoes" kind of folks--but also expressing optimism for the future, since meat & cheese have often been true luxuries in many times & places.

As for pizza, I'm not going to put up with any Italian horseshit here. Look, we know that you probably have a better food culture overall in terms of quality/quantity, but you need to understand, there is SO MUCH quantity here that you can find the "diamonds in the rough" without too much trouble, and that includes pizza. Yes, most of the fast food options are crap, but I've also eaten allegedly DOC-certified Neapolitan pies here. And then you have New York. And New Haven. And Chicago. And Detroit. And California. And I'm not going to mention Altoona but yeah them too. If the pizza exists, you can find it in America. OK, maybe not Japanese mayo & corn pizza, but the New Haven clam pizza makes up for that. And that's not even considering homemade pies. We like pizza and you can find people who care about it and make some pretty amazing pies. There is a lot of shit, but if you want flour milled by Egyptian slaves, and tomatoes from sun-kissed Tuscany, with olive oil from Rachel Ray's pores, and wagyu buffalo mozarella curdled over 9000 times, you can find it here. Just not at Dominos. (WE LIKE PIZZA.)

I don't think it would surprise you, but most American food is farm style. What might surprise you is the vast array of regional differences, but which often aren't represented in restaurants. If you look into "Mexican" food alone, you'll eventually learn that in the US it's really not Mexican at all. Yep, literally every state has a different take on different dishes. Fast food is only popular here because it's fast, used to be cheap, and consistent. Saying restaurant food is American food would be like saying Taco Bell represents authentic Mexican food. Go to someone's actual house for dinner and you'd be surprised if your idea of American food was McDonalds, especially in the South, best food in the country. Had some Brit telling me it was just BBQ lol, poor guy is missing out.

Corn bread/corn cake - most corn dishes are either american or mexican
Almost every region in the south has their own take on slow cooking a large piece of meat, generally with smoke. Texas brisket, ribs, whole pigs, etc.
Biscuits and gravy would sound weird to a Brit, but we mean something totally different by biscuit.
Casseroles have been a staple for at least a century.

lmao cope, the sauce exists to perfectly complement the meat, and enhance carmelization. 10/10 smoked meat + 10/10 sauce is better than 10/10 smoked meat without sauce, any day. The point is to use milder sauces that enhance but don't completely overpower the flavor of the meat.

pic related, it's a burnt ends, a common barbecue dish in Kansas City. It's the ends of brisket, smoked and coated in sauce. They're delicious, even mid-tier ones are really good

This is kind of food that's truly unique to America and sufficiently distanced from the anglo/british cuisine.
