18984607 No.18984607 [Reply] [Original]

So we all know about how bad plastic and plastic containers are, but what's the /v/erdict on styrofoam? this little material seems to have flown under the radar, especially since it's used so much for all types of food - liquids, solids, hot, warm, cold, foods you eat with your ands, and some foods you poke and poke the styrofoam with with a fork, etc. I'm ready to be fully redpilled.

>> No.18984616

If you microwave it your food gets healthy omegas.

I occasionally clean up local beaches from garbage and styrofoam is my #1 priority. There's a lot of it floating around and unchecked it breaks into the single pellets it gets way harder to clean up.

>> No.18984696

It's horrible for the environment and if you microwave your food in it, your chance of contracting ass cancer dramatically increases, not even kidding. But it's cheap and China can make it for pennies to the box, so no one gives a shit. Climate environmentalists and vegans will wail on ranchers for raising cows for slaughter, but do jack shit in terms of what is really causing the issues

soon to banned in commifornia
we already lost plastic single use bags
and plastic straws (due to a single pic of a straw in a turtles nose)

soon we will need to bring our own plates when buying fast food

>>18984856
I'm surprised that isn't a thing yet. They sell plastic food containers like what you can get from take out, I bet some startup in Cali will eventually be BYOP in the future, then it will catch on and be enforced state wide.

>> No.18984943

>>18984891
me too anon, time will tell when the ban takes effect
I agree and do expect some smart startup entrepreneurs will produce a coated non absorbing paper container, like the common four drink holder, and make bank

Yes they are anon. If my state bans plastic bags then that will stop china and india from flooding the oceans with fifty million tons of plastic every year.

Imagine trying to politicize the banning of single use plastics. Are you in favor of microplastic endocrine disruptors in the water supply?

>> No.18986586

Bad but not quite, because a microwave literally shoots microwave radiation thru the Styrofoam. A hot drink will just raise the temp superficially. Then again I'm always a sucker for horchata served in styrofoam so who cares

>> No.18986643

I don't like it because the styrafoam absorbs all my liquids and greases from the food, so I'm "losing" food that way.

yeah, its a tiny amount, I'm still OCD about that.

Bro, I really don't want to hurt you or burst your bubble, but cancer is a fickle and blind bastard. My aunt was a soccer pro, and just about the healthiest person ever. No drink no smoke etc etc. Taught soccer, always in shape. This year is the 5th year since her passing from cancer. What I'm trying to say is, if you're gonna let some fucking styrofoam prevent you from living a good, fulfilled life, you're doing it wrong.

Tl;dr hot cocoa in styrofoam is OK on the weekends

The alternatives still use just as much or more plastic, but are less convenient and more expensive. Those thicker "reusable" plastic bags each contain as much plastic as a few hundred of the thin disposable ones. Are most people going to use their reusable bag 300 times? Of course not. I have dozens of those reusable bags at my house because I go to the store without a bag much more frequently than I wear through one. It's absolutely generating much more plastic waste than the amount of disposable bags I used to go through. Plus, I used to reuse the little plastic bags as liners for my little trash cans and for cleaning up the poops of my guinea pigs. Now I just buy disposable plastic bags on Amazon for those purposes. So I still go through and throw away as many disposable bags as before anyway, in addition to wasting dozens of thicker bags which each equal hundreds of smaller bags worth of plastic. And all of this costs me extra money, and pollutes the environment more to ship.

And why should this topic be politicized: because anyone who evaluates this policy rationally, based on its outcome, can see why it's retarded in literally every way. But things like this happen because liberals (women) only enact policies based on emotions and feelings. This needs to be discussed.

Styrofoam is great. It's why I go to chic fil a alot because all their drinks are in Styrofoam which helps insulate.

All my takeout is in Styrofoam. You can microwave it but don't too much or it will melt the bottom where the food is. People here are scare mongers or trolls.

Sorry to break it to you anon but your aunt likely died of cancer due to the turf that's used in soccer fields. It's made from recycled petroleum products. Highly carcinogenic to the point that it's getting banned in most places now. Back in the day they just said fuck it though and ground up whatever old shit they could find to recycle it into turf.
It's an actual phenomenon. Google "womens soccer cancer turf" or some other bullshit phrase to read up on it. First result obviously will say there's no link, based on a study funded by (((big oil))), but the evidence speaks for itself.

OK, I guess it must be really nice to be a chemical engineer, and understand whether or not melted styrofoam is cutting years off your life? No matter what, about half of us are going to die of cancer, and while you're in your death-throes, you going have to wonder whether it was the melted styrofoam that killed you or (in your case) all the semen you swallowed.
Fuck's sake, all the idiots I have to share this planet with, there must not be a loving, caring God.
