What are some strange cultural differences you have observed first hand, surrounding food and cooking?

For me it was something very similar to pic related.

>get invited back to Dutch friends house after a night out partying, all take outs are closed.

>friend starts making himself dinner and snacks

>abruptly refuses when I ask for a couple slices of bread and butter to toast up, advising that Dutch People don't share food as a tradition.

Only Americans and maybe Canadians eat peanut butter. I've let people try it and they don't like it but they love peanuts. And they love jam on toast. I have seen peanut butter sand sandwiches, I guess it's a whipped cream version of peanut butter, kids like that.

Also people have a really skewed vision of diet. Food around the world is full of salt, sugar, oil, fats, fried dishes, spices, it's not inherently healthier. It's about balance and proportions.

Lastly people around the world think all Amerixand eat the same thing. I always have to explain it's a huge country with regional dishes and people cook from their culture or cook whatever they want, there isn't a typical American diet, we don't eat hamburgers everyday, rarely do people even make pancakes and bacon for breakfast like tv and movies. I had a burger once a year on fourth of July lol. We never ate fast food or fried foods or anything spicy.

I am Dutch and was very cheap. Always buy in sales, split the bill, not very welcoming with food. It was hard breaking a habit, but going from poor student to a good job helped a lot. Now I don't let my friends and family pay for anything when they come to visit, even when they still do though.

When someone comes to visit you go 'samen even naar de supermarkt' and split the bill for crisps, cookies, soda etc. When going to the movies, everybody pays for their own, same with a restaurant. NEVER try to pay for someone else, because they'll miseuse the situation and order the most expensive thing. They'll use the mentality of 'somebody else is paying so why not go for something I don't wanna pay for normally'. Very common here.

"THE DUTCH could be here" he thought, "I've never been in this neighborhood before. There could be DUTCHMEN anywhere." The cool wind felt good against his bare chest. "I HATE THE DUTCH" he thought. I had a Vietnamese roommate in college. I have all sorts of horror stories from that experience, but basically it seems like basic kitchen/food hygiene doesn’t exist in Vietnamese or immigrant communities. This guy would leave out perishable food like dairy and meat for an entire day and then I’d find it put back in the fridge. He’d cook a big pot of some sort of fish stew and just leave it on the counter and eat from it the next day. He also apparently didn’t know how a dishwasher works, I’d often find bowls sitting right side up on the top rack and they’d be filled with water if he ran the dishwasher before I could correct it. Im Dutch AMA

A lot of these stories are complete bs. The "tikkie" screenshots are obviously created as a joke and straight from Twitter. Some of these are sent by the guy sending the money request. Why would they screenshot the convo and put it on Twitter to mock sending tikkies if they were genuine?

What people dont seem to realize is that Dutch people have set times where they eat. Its a very autistic boring culture. Just the idea of going by someones house unannounced and just hanging out there untill its dinner time just doesnt happen. At most it will be drinking coffee.

Also the Dutch are a very principled people. We even got a show here where they make some retiref judge travel to two neighbors arguing over 2 cm of land, literally. For a lot of the cheapskates its not even about the money in their autistic mind they see it as an insult if you contribute your share. Like why would you not put money in if were eating together? This is not the case if you are directly invited.

Its a kind of "you think you are better than the rest of? Mr bigshot?" kind of culture. If you even mention being proud of yourself or give yourself a compliment you will get destroyed. Try giving a Dutch person a compliment, they cant take one.

Hope this helps

Nobody makes anybody pay after lol, that is not a thing. The "tikkie" thing is a corny name a bank made up for quickly wiring/requesting a payment. This then got memed into being Dutch people send you a "tikkie" for a cup of coffee. That meme is only an extension of the Dutch people are cheap stereotype.

What im trying to say is, Dutch culture is very cold and autistic. People dont go and have meals together. That just doesnt really happen unless you are invited.

The only time ive ever experienced sending money after is when you go drink at someones place get black-out drunk and one guy orders like 50 bucks worth of takeout and people will say "whats my order cost? Okay ill give you the money" I dont think thats unreasonable or cheap to do in that setting. Ofcourse its different if you are having a party. Like lets say you ask people to come watch a football match you ofcourse have food ready for everyone.

I'll still feed someone who comes over who breaks those but it's rude. If it's a food where there are a lot of leftovers then it's easy but if it's a food I used up everything to make and it doesn't split well (IE hamburgers) then god dammit.

Not the same - as others have pointed out. You have an understanding culturally that the kid should go back or that you'd have talked about this beforehand. This is also a bit less formal than having a proper "guest" Like in America - I may offer food to my friends kid, I'd probably call them and check if that was okay, but if they were just around without me knowing they'd be around - eeeh. I assume that if push came to shove you'd not fucking leave the kid hungry. The dutch shit is just rude to most people and while it is 100% cultural and they can do what they want - they live near tons of other cultures, they constantly move across borders, and they don't have an excuse to be myopics cunts - They can treat dutch people that way, but they should recognize that most people are not going to grok their shit, and they need to explain it or they will come off as rude.

I have been in Europe many times, and most dutch people i've met are weird, but nice from my experience, but they genuinly don't seem to understand that they are not the center of the fucking world. I once had a Dutch girl minge at me (American) and a Syrian refugee that the train only goes to her bum-fuck nobody cares farm town every hour or something? We laughed so fucking hard at her. I also went on a cruise with a bunch of them once and...The old dutch people sucked, and they thought that everything belonged to them, they'd just leave shit to "Claim" spaces and not show up for huge spans of time etc, and they would be loud and shitty everywhere they went, but if anyone who was not dutch did that they stared at you like you were screaming in a library. The staff had to warn people about the dutch, and the dutch people, I shit you not, I am told, are forced to do - how to not be dutch fucks for dummies 101, so they don't get into fights with other guests.

I’m not him, but I imagine his point was that the waiter was surprised they ordered both the meat and cheese plate. It could be the plates are relatively expensive, the locals usually don’t eat that much while out drinking, or there’s some weird local custom I don’t know about

The bar had an appertivo menu. Among other options there was an option for that was a few types of meats (like salumi, prosciutto, capricola) and another that was a few kinds of cheeses. Each plate was just what was listed with a little garnish, nothing else. Like the cheese plate didn't come with crackers.

The waiter was befuddled that we would order both.

Greek here, worked in Sweden, Denmark and Holland and have now returned to Greece,

Swedes are the worst. Dutch have become softer due to their hippiness, but only in Sweden have I witnessed visiting a colleague during lunch hours to continue work on a prototype he kept at his garage,
then him, his sister and his mother putting up the table to have lunch and me just standing there, without being offered a plate, in the same table, while they ate.

I was flabbergasted. Every other Mediterranean I spoke to either had similar experiences with swedes or was horrified by the story. My parents, when I told them the story, promptly told me to cut all contact with said coworker. It's that much of a taboo here.

And no, you're not expected to "bring something" if you come visit a greek household, although it's considered kind. But standing on a lunch/dinner table without being offered to join is vendetta material.

>> No.18974444

>>18974430
Addendum: I think northeners view eating as merely feeding themselves, whereas eating in the Mediterranean is primarily a social gathering.

There's even folk sayings in Spain, Portugal and Greece about people eating by themselves, reducing the event to only sustenance, which is seen as barbaric and dehumanizing. For example, "single-eater" is a common insult.

Being over a friend's house as a kid and them getting ready for dinner being the sign to leave is kind of familiar to me as an american but even when I was a kid in the 90s would have been seen as pretty old fashioned, and even a family who was old fashioned like that would almost certainly "invite" you to stay for dinner just as a formality without hesitation. Around where I live (Southern US) if someone else is paying for you, you be sure to get the cheap/normally priced thing, otherwise you look like a major fucking asshole. Nice thread give me some advice ck bros
I went camping with some acquaintances (didnt know all of them but one very well), and I made sandwhiches to be helpful and make something good for them. I didnt intend to make them pay but got some expensive ingredients for them. They bought some ingredients to make a stew (which we then ate). Then, after the trip, they wanted me to pay for the stew partially (but never mentioned it before/during the trip). So I sent them the bill for the sandwhiches (which would be more money/person than what they wanted me to pay for the stew). So they never paid me but never again brought it up, assuming I don't need to pay them anymore.
Was I retarded here? I thought it was rude to offer stew and then try to make me pay for it. I wouldn't charge them the sandwhiches otherwise. They were dutch btw.

He finally returned my call. First of all he clarified he didn't interact with too many Dutch people while in Tilburg, apparently it's a foreign student college town. But he did meet quite a few.
Second, he said that situations that are a perfect equivalent to what is being described in this thread never happened to him but he can believe it. He described it thus:
"OK, so when you treat Dutch people, they'll graciously accept your kindness, but they feel no obligation to reciprocate at any point".

At the time he was there he met his ex Romanian girlfriend Oana or Ioana, I didn't catch it over the phone. She told him she had a Dutch ex and at one point she was staying over at his place and had to catch a flight on the same day. She asked him if he could take her there and he just said "No, sorry, I don't feel like it", like he didn't even try to come up with an excuse. I asked him (and apparently so did he ask her), "did he at least offer to pay for her cab or at least call her a cab?" "Nope!"

But overall, he found all the stories from here I recounted to him, completely believable.

But if people are choosing to eat Eastern food in a Western tradition that's fair enough. Most Westerners are used to dinner being a single item, shared out evenly with maybe an accompaniment. I think it's PBJ that other countries don't eat, because in other english speaking countries, "jelly" means "jello." Their "jam" is closer in substance to what the US means by "jelly."

Unsweet peanut butter is great, I can't stand the sweet kind which is basically all of it in America.
Thankfully, adams is everywhere and is just peanuts.
I don't usually even use jelly, just a piece of wheat bread folded on itself with peanut butter. Maybe a pinch of salt.
Made it awkward when going over to friends houses and their mom offered snacks but they usually had carrots at least.

Love being Dutch. All these stories are heavily exaggerated ofcourse. No Dutch family will ever deny a guest food or ask them to pay for the coffee. This has never happend and I invite anyone who claims otherwise to my home to prove them wrong.

if something's cooked and covered then it's fine for a while especially in temperate winters or cold places. soups are easy to keep good, just reboil them once a day and they'll last forever. but I'm surprised someone from a tropical country does that.
the mouth open loud chewing thing is showing that you like the food, pretty common in asia

>What im trying to say is, Dutch culture is very cold and autistic. People dont go and have meals together. That just doesnt really happen unless you are invited.
that in itself is fucking weird dude. most of the world sharing food/drink is THE key social bonding experience. in the medieval period christians and jews eating together was banned because it meant they were social peers. eating with your friends is normal.

Resteraunt food easily and predictably induces diareah in me 30 minutes to one hour after eating out.
Going out to a resteraunt once a week is an easy and painless way to insure that my colon is regularly emptying itself without worrying about a constant influx of hard fiber to my diet.

By having my colon emptied completely and utterly once per week, it allows me to go to work with confidence the next day during the work week without worrying about having to deal with feeling like I need to shit while on the job, when its difficult if not impossible to find 10-15 minutes to recuse myself into a restroom to try and shit.

poop at home though? or use laxatives or something I don't know. anon what the fuck? you have like, an onion insensitivity or some other IBS shit if restaurants give you diarrhea so consistently. I've never gotten an upset stomach from a restaurant except the one time I got food poisoning.
and what's so hard about fiber? do you not eat vegetables?

Jesus Christ man. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a culture like that. In almost every culture being seen as generous is a good thing. When I would go out to eat with my family and their friends they used to fight over who would pay the most. It shows your generosity and is also a good way to flex your wealth.
