canned peas/carrots is great if you just want throw some meat into a slow cooker and leave it, i wouldnt use canned veg for anything else though. steamed fresh is the way to go for me

>> No.18969056

ideally no, but theyre fine and even easier than fresh for many things

I stuck my vegetables in your mom's can if you get my drift

Peas, sweetcorn kernels, beetroot, tomatoes and beans only but yes.

tomato paste is the only one i find worthwhile. with an automatic partial pressure cooker, dry beans actually take less of my time vs canned, because i don't need to move the water and metal from the store shelf to home. Dry is also fresher, still being viable seeds instead of dead for weeks. Just need to remember to soak, unless eating lentils or dal.

Mostly no because you end up paying for half or more than half the canned weight in water not food.

Also they typically have more sodium than frozen alternatives. Canned beans are good though because the canning liquor has a thickening power that is good in recipes.

They’re sold by weight yeah, but you’re fucking retarded if you think buying fresh mandarin oranges will be cheaper than canned. Same with a lot of canned food, it often doesn’t taste as good as fresh, but it’s definitely cheaper. The sodium criticism is valid, but can usually be solved by adding less salt to the final meal

Canned anything, no. Acceptable only during war time or at Boy Scout camp.

what did he mean by this?

I keep canned crushed tomatoes in my pantry because I get shitty and expensive tomatoes otherwise, and I also don't really enjoy dealing with tomato skins.

Aside from that, I mostly just do fresh vegetables, though I admittedly mostly just do peppers/onions or scallions/radishes and I should get more variety with what vegetables I eat.

canned mandarins are $1.79 for a 16oz can here
let's say half that can is actually mandarins (it's likely lower), that's $3.58/lb
It's about $1.40/lb for fresh mandarins here. let's say half the weight of each mandarin is the peel (it's likely lower), that's $2.80/lb
how much are you paying for fresh mandarins?

how long do those mandarins last?

Sure if you can them yourself

>> No.18969863

corn yes
peas yes
chickpeas sometimes
beans sometimes
tomatoes sometimes
rest no.

sometimes is for soups and stews because it's better.

that wasn't the question. the question was cost and the implication that someone is retarded for believing something that is, as it turns out, true.

As with everything in life, it just depends, bro. It just fuckin' depends.

Peas taste different canned than frozen. Same with green beans. Corn? Well, I'm not sure you can tell much of a difference. Might be a bit softer. It's been awhile.

Broccoli? Cauliflower? Cabbage? Has to be fresh.

And obviously you can't make a proper BLT with canned tomatoes. I mean...ewww. Maybe you could make a ketchup and make a BLK, but that doesn't sound that good to me.

I don't get how people eat canned peas or green beans when they're disgusting compared to frozen.

The only things I buy canned are legumes, tomatoes and fish.

Just another tool in the kitchen. I use them for some things or if I'm feeling lazy but I just as often use "fresh" or frozen. All that matters is I'm eating vegetables.
