Every time I've met someone who thought this was true the food was very middle of the road and they didn't know any better.
The food is actually about to be good at a chinese place if they have a chinese menu and will let you order from it without pretending it's a secret.

It's all Sysco goyslop anyway. It all tastes the same since a lot of those hole-in-the-wall Chinese carry-out places are actually franchises that all use the same recipes. Yes it can be good, but you have to know what to order.
