What's the best oil for seasoning cast iron cook ware?

>> No.18927782

Always used grapseed oil without any problem

>> No.18927830

>>18927254
any neutral high smoke point oil is good
lard is historically fairly decent
flax seed oil has been fairly popular lately, but search for something without lignans
or ligma for that matter

>> No.18927919

I use flax oil, cut with a little beeswax on the first coat.

>> No.18928046

>>18927830
ligma oil seems to work ok, but I notice a slight taste in some of the meals I prepare with it. I've had better nonstick results with sugma oil imported from asia.

This is how we know you don't actually cook with your pans.

>> No.18928535

Grapeseed oil is good for seasoning, not really my choice for cooking with, though. How do you think you "know" how he doesn't cook?

>> No.18928541

>>18927830
I think flax seed oil is only used because the low smoke point means it will turn the pan black at a lower temperature, slightly more easily than with other oils or by cooking in it. Lodge uses a mixture of several different types of oils with different smoke points to get a tough layer of seasoning and dark color simultaneously. Flax oil supposedly isn't that tough, although I've never bothered to season with it, since it's expensive and only available in the vitamin aisle.

did people really worry about what oil to season their cast iron with before the internet? did they even season their pans?

>> No.18928577

>>18928555
if you have to ask if people wondered, you've never cooked in your life

did they season their pans? Yes
did they worry about what oil? sometimes
vegetable oil is a fairly old invention, commercially available option too, naturally people would ask what to use if they fucked up a decent seasoning

i cook regularly, lol relax

>> No.18928600

None. No "seasoning". Your cast iron almost certainly is carmelized and uneven. In which case, you need to take soap and a metal scrub to it. The highest-quality kitchens on earth will teach you this.

>straight flax oil
better than with beeswax but still flakes
>beeswax
i tried a mix with beeswax and it flaked instantaneously, i think its smoke point is too low and going over the smoke point is what makes the seasoning flake
>lard
i've been cooking a lot with lard and my seasoning is patchy but i fried an egg yesterday and nothing stuck, i believe this is also the most traditional
pic related was made by my grandfather when he worked in the Port Talbot Steelworks as a wedding present for my grandmother. that was seasoned with lard and spend decades in my parents garage before i stripped most of it down and reseasoned with lard and i mostly use it for beef burgers and as a pizza stone

I just use Crisco shortening. Never had any problems with it. But I am only a home cook so make sure the stuff you buy does not kill your wallet.

>> No.18929306

You're babying the cast iron too much. I treat mine like shit. Cold water while its still hot, scrubbing it down with Dawn Platinum, cooking tomatoes, etc.

All I ever do to take care of it is super simple. Every time I use the oven to make chicken tenders, I wipe a quick layer of grapeseed oil and leave it back in the oven. My cast iron has the most beautiful layer of seasoning I have ever seen.

>> No.18929685

I use extra virgin olive oil

>> No.18929697

the chinese love their cast iron pans and your pan is most likely chinese made. keep it authentic. use gutter oil
shitty oil for shitty pan

>> No.18929699

>>18927254
seasoning is a meme. just use it and clean it well and it becomes non stick over time.
I wouldn't bother seasoning a bare metal pan, but there is literally zero reason to season a factory seasoned pan.

Kek, I cooked with Iron and carbon steel for longer than I've been on that website. Grapessed oil for seasoning and then just cooking with the damn thing works perfectly well, whatever you nerds think about it.
