Is mezcal a meme or is it actually worth trying?

Too smokey. I hate it. Also hate scotch for the same reason

I don't help financially support mexico or mexicans so I wouldn't know.

It is absolutely worth trying a quality mezcal. Very wide array of possible flavors. Del maguey is a good starting brand.

I like it. Reminds me of when I'd drink new make scotch in the Highlands for pure enjoyment. It's clean and has good body for the ABV.
>>18922412
You know you can get non-smoky Mezcal right? Mezcals made using Agave durangensis are more fruity and not as smoke driven, but smoke is also depending on quality. Higher quality mezcal usually isn't as smoky so the better bottlings of Del Maguey may be your best bet.

there is also plenty of scotch that isn't smokey. any scotch other than Islay, really.

Picked this up. First time trying mezcal while sampling at the store. He stated he had one that taste like blue cheese which I passed on.

Mezcal is kind of a hobby. There are your entry mezcals which give you a feel for the smokiness and some of the complexity to expect, sipping young and neat. After that point, taste taste taste. The pervasive quality is that mezcals are all small batches, imported into select regions (if at all), and will differ distinctly from batch to batch from the same distiller. It's like tasting wine vintages x5.
The other thing I've heard consistently is that the best mezcals don't leave their villages, so to really get into it eventually you'd want to visit a tasting festival in Mexico (there's shitloads to see for any interest in Mexico anyway, so no need to make that your only reason to go).

If you like agave-forward tequila, mezcal is a natural next step. If you like the finer aspects of vintages etc in wine, it's definitely a spirit to look into, though you'll probably also want to look at the various European brandies. If the whole craft brewing, hand-made, stone-ground, traditional oven-roasted pitch appeals to you, then mezcal's the place. But it's only getting more expensive as Mexico, slowly, gets more developed and the export market continues to grow following a boom over the last decade.

>>18922412
Mezcal doesn't have to be smokey. Nothing in its specification requires it.

>>18922954
Scotch also doesn't have to be smokey, or peated (which you might be confusing as the same thing). There's a new Islay distiller that doesn't peat anything.

They're completely different classes at that point. Most mezcal is presented young and judged on its young expressions, whereas for tequila you evaluate it different levels of aging in oak. If you prefer one class of spirit generally over another, fine, but tequila and mezcal are not compared side-by-side as if one is simply a better spirit than another.

It's good if you like smoke. Lot of options for unique cocktails. I recently had one that used something beet based for the mixer, lemon/salt/pepper/sugar on rim.

A cousin and I and a Japanese friend did the mezcal worm thing one summer, we'd get the worm from the bottom of the mezcal bottle then chop it up into three bits to we each got an even portion then go swimming in the Atlantic with rip tides and stuff, none of us were ever harmed from that.
