Same goes for minced meat, ice cream, frozen food, deep fried premades. Profits are skyrocketing in the automated food industry.

My diet the past month because the bank stole my money has been

espresso shots
oranges
bread

A couple days I got pizza or pasta. I have oranges, coffee, pepper, balsamic vinegar, and mayonnaise in my kitchen. That's it. I won't die, but I am not satisfied.

Porridge and molasses were cheaper than alternatives in the 30s, but nowadays it's gotta be rice (whole grain if possible) and beans. Barley is cheap as well, in the bean section, and has lots of protein. All of which can be cooked in the microwave. Chicken is super efficient and heavily subsidized if you need meat. Canned anchovies if you need extra omega 3s. Spices: salt and whole pepper with reusable grinder from thrift store, plus oregano, cinnamon, and bay leaves, getting Badia or other cheap brands. Really you can get all the nutrition you ever need for super duper cheap nowadays. And there are plenty of free meals programs, and of course food stamps. There's no excuse for starving or not eating well like in the depression.

Honestly the worst thing you can do is continue to live in an expensive city. Move to a cheap city with some regular inflow+outflow of work (read: avoid the dead cities in the Rust Belt) and functional public transit.

you're completely wrong about my demographic fren, I also used up what I had through covid. I don't really feel like getting into it it's just funny to share my food misfortunes, like it's not that bad. It could be worse, tons of people struggle everyday, it's not permanent for me. I build a smoke house and trap wild boar and pen them so they can be finished on corn. Then I live on ham, beans, cornbread, greens and whatever else I can grow in the yard. I'd also raise chickens, ducks and rabbits for eggs and meat. A dairy cow would be nice, but I'd have to build a barn. You'd really only need to buy hay, corn, coffee, sugar, flour, salt, yeast, baking soda and vinegar. Plus there's 6 or 7 pecan trees on the property. I could probably live off squirrel, groundhog, pecans, kudzu, dandelion greens and pine needle tea indefinitely.

If I were an apartment dweller I'd learn to get real inventive with cheap dry goods like flour, cornmeal, beans and rice.
