Is it normal for the heating element in an oven to fail by splitting at a fissure?

Was preheating the apartment oven for taters and heard a soft clap and mild metallic smell, and came across pic related. Looks like shit, bit that's mostly what remained after my first clean after moving.

Its just wear and tear. Usually very easy to replace, get the part online shipped, be sure to unplug your stove or turn off the breakers. those run at 240V, enough to hurt or kill.

One time the element in my oven got white hot and then basically disintegrated to ash. Had an appliance repair guy come and fix it and he said it was fairly common, just replace the element.
