recent acquisition edition!
found some shiner bock, and picked up a couple of bottles that were recommended to me by some anons from the last thread. looking forward to opening this Pipe Dream the most, i think.

only poured this a handful of times since I got it last June. nose is more Port/Sherry style Speyside than Islay, but still has a bit of fusel smoke for a nice contrast.
>palate is fruit cocktail on a slightly burnt, super buttery shortcake dusted with lemon zest.
>peat smoke lingers in the finish. less ash and more charry with just bit of sherry tannin that's borderline candied fig/matchstick.

anybody here like Linkwood? this bottler offers a couple and theres an 11 year old unchillfiltered Signatory release that's fully matured in a charred wine hogshead.

I don't want to go into too much detail but it was a lot of shoplifting with a gun involved near the end. Like when you see those videos where the gorillas just openly loot a store and walk out and the clerks can't really do anything. it's not the exception. every single sherry cask influenced whisky I've had have been easily drinkable at the worst. bourbon barrels require more finesse because first fill and virgin oak can easily overpower the malt character and 4th+ refill gives hardly any flavor inside of a decade.

the barley strains being used today are less flavorful than ever due to the focus on yield and low cost. i.e. if they would use richer ingredients they wouldnt need sherried oak to beef up the majority of whisky being.

The first batch was a 50/50 blend of Caol Ila and Clynelish (or maybe Ardmore, it was a long time ago lol), both about 10 or 15 years old, aged in ex-bourbon, and bottled at cask strength. It was just called Monster. John Glaser, the founder, didn’t want to make it at first because he didn’t personally enjoy peaty whisky. It turned out to be the blend that put him on the map, so he decided to make it regular production item as Peat Monster, with some water added to lower the proof.

I've had it. Honestly I prefer it to the old Arran Cask Strength. Way more balanced sherry. Very reasonably priced, only other distillery bottled CS sherried scotches I'd put above it around that price are Tamdhu Batch Strength and Glenallachie 10yr CS. So it hits a pretty good high for sub-$100 (unless prices went up again, in which case feels bad.)

you've gone about it wrong from the start if you thought cheap flavored whiskey would be easier to drink or be free of the quality's of ethanol and how it affects your body.

first learn how to drink(approach it like a hot beverage or soup, less is more, savor it for as long as you can muster and do not do shots). then find what you like to drink(better to have 2 or more bottles poured at once to compare and find your sweetspot). then you combine those aspects and become all that is man(who can appreciate the glass in his hand as well as the drink within).

if you're only looking for inebriation then go down the buttchug path.

Spent last night sipping Laphroaig 10 and Ardbeg 10 to decide which one I like more. I came to the conclusion that Laphroaig is the slightly more interesting of the two, but Ardbeg is just so much more drinkable it's not even close. I just can't have more than two Laphoroaigs without wanting to switch to something else, so Ardbeg it is. However, I prefer the Laphroaig bottle design to Ardbeg's. Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel is fantastic in my opinion. It’s hard to find a bottle that good at that price. The first bottle I picked up in particular must have came from a really good barrel because it had these “dusty”, “chalky” notes (don’t know how else to describe it, almost like a dusting of candy chalk or something) that I’ve been chasing since. It’s a fantastic bourbon for the money in my opinion, one of the best. I believe it’s a 12 year old whiskey

This is very true, most of my friends IRL have no clue how to enjoy spirits properly, so they stick to gay shit like seltzers and nastiness like crown apple. I’ve taught so many people to take small sips, hold it in your mouth for at least five seconds and swish it around gently, then swallow and exhale through your nose. I hope at least one of them has figured it out and is able to enjoy spirits how they’re meant to be enjoyed

Wild Turkey 101 is the answer for this. Around $25, it’s a little higher proof so it’s good for mixing and it’s also perfectly acceptable to sip. I’m pretty picky and I enjoy a WT101 neat. It’s the best bourbon at the price point IMO and I’ve tried a lot, don’t let the name scare you off. Its 100 proof and it has a more matured taste than WT101. While both are relatively high-rye, WT101 is a bit sharper/slightly astringent where OGD Bonded is more of a darker, baking spices sort of spicy. Both great but definitely give the old grand dad a try, should be able to find the bottled in bond at your local total wine/bottle store.

something from Caol Ila, but not bottled by Diageo. so basically any Islay single malt that is branded but never names the distillery is 9/10 times Caol Ila and usually about 1/2 the price of the officially bottled 12 and with better representation of the malt.

in terms of overall taste, Kilchoman Machir Bay is very similar to Ardbeg 10 in my experience, but I enjoy Kilchoman more. it sounds cheesey but you can taste the integrity of the farm-to-bottle aspect in Kilchoman. richer and oilier than Ardbeg without the industrial edge. Machir Bay is usually 5-7 years old with a small amount of sherry maturation, but it tastes like 10 year old whisky where as Ardbeg 10 tastes like younger whisky from less active casks.

If you find a bottle of The 6 Isles, that will be a good adjacent pour. if not that then Ledaig 10. recent batches have been more/less sherried so pay attention to the color if you arent crazy about that combination.
