If you get charcoal just get a Weber kettle, the one with the fancy ash catcher is nice, but the cheaper one with the bullshit plate ash catcher does the job.

Go to Costco and get kingsford pro charcoal. You can usually get it on sale for 13-15 bucks for 40lbs. Also, just get the paraffin wax cubes to start the charcoal. Put it in a pyramid, walk away for 20 minutes and prep whatever you want and come back when the coals are ashed over and knock them down. Lighter fluid is awful and makes your food taste awful. Chimney starters work great, but you need welding gloves to pick one up that's started.

If you're interested in smoking meat as well as grilling, I would get a Pit Barrel. It's brainless to operate and the results are fantastic, plus you can use it as a grill.

I have an MHP Nat Gas grill which is great for basic grilling, and it's 30 years old, but they are also > 1000USD new. It's super convenient and I never run out of gas, but there's no satisfaction in using it.

Whatever you do, avoid buying chink shit from walmart or home depot, it will crap out within 18 months.

If this is your first grill go with propane. It's less work and you can control the heat more easily. Goes from cold to cooking temp in 5-10 minutes vs 30. Less cleanup, no ashes full of hot coals to deal with. Charcoal may have a slight edge when it comes to flavor but most of the time not worth the extra effort.

The "smokey" grilled flavor people think they're getting from charcoal when grilling is actually just from putting meat on a grill hence why every shitty bar with a kitchen can give you a grilled chicken breast/steak/burger. 10 minutes is not enough time to impart any significant wood flavor. Charcoal does NOT taste better. Such a stupid meme. It just makes your food taste more like charcoal. If you actually want to taste your food, gas is superior. Gas is actually superior by every single metric. Faster, easier to control temp, and tastes BETTER! Manchild faggots are just obsessed with charcoal because they think its manly for some stupid reason. So many pathetic little white collar nerds standing around their stupid charcoal grills smoking cigars and drinking manly beer/whiskey because they think it's cool. it's not gigantic, but if you're new enough to be asking about gas vs charcoal, you probably aren't gonna be hosting 30 people for ribs any time soon anyways. smoker works fine. you'll want to add your own seam insulation around the lids, replace the nut/bolt hardware on the smoker baffle, and replace the thermometers with something more robust and accurate, but for few hundred bucks you'll have a working system that can accommodate all single family needs.
i can smoke meat WHILE toasting breads over the coals, gas grilling veggies, and mulling wine over the cooking eye all at the same time.

because slight taste differences aside, what you need is a grilling setup that will encourage you to actually get out there and grill something. you don't know what you like yet, and having the option to just go blast some dogs with gas OR crack a few beers and smoke a brisket all morning will leave you the options to figure out what you like.

Get propane. It's very easy to use and requires very little cleanup. You can easily start cooking with little to no preparation of the grill, and you will generally only use as much fuel as required to complete the cook.
Charcoal is good and has its own flavour and way of cooking, but it's more work and there is a learning curve depending on what meat or seafood you are trying to prepare.
