It's a bit of scuffed, needed a clean, and I had to make replacement feet with rubber washers and hot glue, but holy shit this thing was a gigantic upgrade in terms of ease of use.

Although, maybe it's because I use an aeropress or because I like my coffee with cream, but I can't taste any difference between this any my krups bade grinder. Definitely the right call to buy this instead of something more expensive.

Is there a decent electric grinder under $100 US? I visited my parents and took my espresso stuff to make drinks for them, and they asked me about my grinder, so I explained the basics of grind consistency and the benefits of burrs, and they were interested in getting an electric burr grinder, but don't want to spend more than $100. They sound reluctant to spend more than $50, but I don't know if that's doable. They exclusively drink from one of those bog standard 12-cup electric coffee machines and buy their beans at Starbucks, so obviously they're not coffee snobs or experts, but I think a cheap burr grinder would still be an improvement for them over using the blade grinder or having the Starbucks they go to grind an entire pound at a time.

That's what I told them, that at that price point, they're looking at a hand grinder. My mother has arthritis, and my father is lazy, so I know if I get them a hand grinder, they'll never use it. Especially since they'd need to grind a lot of coffee, since just the two of them by themselves drink an entire pot in the morning.
>>18821662
This is probably the best option for them, but they likely won't go for it. I don't know if I'd be able to convince them to drop $100 for a used grinder. I may just buy it for them and hope they'll use it.

My parents' coffee situation is weird and, I think, a little bit funny. When I was growing up, they would drink shitty pre-ground Yuban or whatever they'd buy in bulk at Costco. About fifteen years ago, I got a part time at Starbucks, and got them a free bag of a coffee they sell called Casi Cielo, a seasonal Guatemalan coffee they sell, and probably the best whole bean coffee Starbucks carries. They fell in love with it, and asked me to hoard my free bags of coffee and ship it to them, instead of flipping it on eBay as I usually did. I haven't worked at Starbucks in about a decade, but my dad will still go to the local stores and buy up their entire supply whenever it's available, and now it's all they drink and told me they can't really stand the shitty pre-ground supermarket stuff. If they run out of that coffee, they'll switch to tea. When I visited them yesterday, I offered to grind their coffee with my hand grinder, but my mom stopped me because she immediately knew it would make a huge difference to have fresh burr-ground coffee, and she sort of didn't want to know, because she knew the financial rabbit hole coffee snobbery can lead to. They're reluctant to try better beans or better grinders, or better brew methods because they don't want to "have to" start spending more money on their morning coffee.

They burn your coffee, no matter what kind you use.
>they minimise the heated contact of the boiler to just boil the liquid right below the tube
They heat up the whole thing. Just because you pinpoint heat a bit of the plate that doesn't mean that heat isn't going to be distributed throughout all the liquid. You'd need to isolate the liquid you're heating if you wanted to even attempt this, and you fundamentally can't because you need more liquid to pour in.
And I'm using the word liquid instead of water because the brewed coffee just falls back into the sea of water, gets burned and circulates again and again. It's a horrible brewing method. If you're this lazy just us a mr. coffee or equivalent.

Fourth: he drinks coffee filled with cream and sugar so his opinion is entirely discarded
This video is worthless on percolator coffee, and I normally like his videos for their well-researched content.

>>18821991
Yes, that’s true but they don’t boil and burn the whole thing. It stays hot. Again, have you ever tried percolator coffee, or is this just an academic exercise? >> No.18823608

>>18823549
A faster, more even extraction is still preferable to a slower uneven one. Its not all that coarse of a grind fwiw, you're just used to looking at massive amounts of fines all over the bed. Better grinders(the anon above is either using a zp6 or kafatek flat) with more narrow particle distributions will let you get away with coarser grinds, but tastier cups because you're more evenly extracting the coffee.
>This shows exactly the “common knowledge” curve I was talking about earlier; if you grind too fine, average extraction yield goes down because your extraction becomes more uneven.
https://coffeeadastra.com/2020/04/02/why-cant-we-grind-coffee-finer-for-pour-over/
>Whenever too many coffee fines get trapped in the pores of a paper filter, the drip rate of a coffee brew can go down drastically. This is not only a problem because the brew becomes much longer: the bigger issue is that whatever water is still able to pass through will do so along smaller, and unchanging paths through the filter. This means that large regions of the coffee bed will potentially stop receiving fresh water, and will remain under extracted, while other regions will receive the bulk of the flow and contribute astringency or other unpleasant flavors caused by over extraction.

Dark roasts will always taste like dark roasts but it seems like you're on the right path. washed
as usual the tasting notes were 100% wrong. idk maybe you get those notes if you make espresso or something.

my notes were strange but not bad.
rice paper cold spring roll with a touch of teriyaki chicken.
i will now add a bit of raw sugar and taste again listing the notes i find.
hmm
again, spring roll but standing out even more this time.
i will not add small increments of full cream lactose free(it tastes better than regular) cows milk and note the flavors until i finish the cup.
first addition has changed the taste to something like lemon and honey tea
same
same but weaker
taste of anything at all entirely gone.
shame
perhaps if it had gotten the full 35 grams as advertised it might have changed the flavor
im not a fan on washed and i have never had coffee from this specific region before.
i would be interested if anyone else gets this coffee and has a different experience.

Oh thats good shit. Who's the roaster? I bought 10lbs of late 2020 chelchele greens last January but I've only tried the nat. One of my favorites. Very herby and complex. Like honey suckle. Almost lightly perfumed and lemony sweet. Bit of lighter stonefruits like peach or apricot too. Hopefully it warms up a bit soon so I can roast more of it. Everything standart ships will probably be a little too light for optimal mokas btw. Hopefully the next one is a bit more to your taste.

grind a bit coarser than espresso
fill the basket
level it out with a knife or something
dont tamp it or press it down
boil water
pour boiling water in base
put full basket in base
screw top on bas
put moka on the smallest burner(if you dont have gas i dont consider you a human)
put the heat to max, the flame ring should be the same diameter as the base of the moka
wait until coffee starts to flow
as soon as you cant see the silver bottom of the top half of the moka turn the heat to min
wait until the coffee reaches halfway to the bottom of the spout(you will have to eyeball this)
at this point turn the heat off
once the coffee has reached the bottom of the spout take it off the stove and run the base under cold water for 15-25 seconds making sure not to spill coffee
pour coffee and enjoy

its that simple.
also you may be getting grit because you are using a standard filter which sucks, try buying a E&B Lab competition filter. it is easily the best moka filter you can buy and it costs less than $20(im pretty sure.)

you can also put an aeropress filter on the moka filter(wet it a bit to make sure it sticks), this will make sure no fines or grit end up in the cup (and will slightly increase back pressure) but it will remove alot of the natural oils of the coffee and affect the taste and mouthfeel.
i hope this helps.
this is my method that i took from hoffmann and wired gourmet and have been using it 2-3 times every day for a year and it works perfectly every time.

that last 5-10% of potential liquid that sputters is the scum of the moka.
it tastes bad and will objectively taint the taste of the rest of the moka.

Did you try this place?
https://www.manucafe.cz/
I buy from them for about 2 years. I'm very happy with them, fast, very good package. A very big variety. When they have something special they give a notice. I grind manual, my dad his old coffee grinder. He used it till he died, still does a great job. He used the paper filter . Last few years I use only the French press, you can control the brew better, all depending what you are in the mood for. Short, long, etc. A lot of experimenting .
When I'm in a hurry it's the machine who grinds and makes the coffee.
For the first time I watched videos of people making coffee, the links given here.
There is some method in it to make a good coffee, but, everyone has different taste. My coffee is made different a lot of times, depending how I feel or what I'm in the mood for. All those videos look like a copy of one, all copying the other one pretending to be the expert, social media copycat give me likes .
Everyone tastes it differently, I have a friend who loves his coffee beyond believe, I'm like wtf when I taste it.
Then I have an aunt who say Starbucks has the best coffee ever. So I drove 90 kilometers to praha to taste it, you hear so much that name ,so let's try it. I sipped on it and left it there. Who wants to pay that money for that stuff.
We all see different, hear different, smell different and taste different. If you like your brew ,be happy.
People learn something new every day, it's good to improve.
Coffee is good. The hardest drug I ever had, never been able to quit, no matter how hard I tried after doctors request.
My max without was 2 weeks, when family visited during weekend having coffee, the smell,... I wanted to snort coffee ground on the toilet seat in a blacked out bathroom.
Don't forget that link, so many beans, so many countries, so many flavors .
Coffee.

Nah I've only tried a handful of of eu roasters.
>All those videos look like a copy of one, all copying the other one pretending to be the expert, social media copycat give me likes .
Correct. Making coffee isn't a static recipe. You should always be juggling variables to dial in. Those beginner videos you watched are just that. A frame of reference for those who lack one so they don't pour a half bag into a french press or make a v60 that comes out looking like sludge. When you see a title like "Ultimate french press technique" you should realize its the ultimate technique for a bozo who has to look up what to do on youtube.

New brewer arrived straight from Mao's candy land.

> meant for nespresso and dolce gusto capsules
>also has a ground coffee basket
Tried with some ground, generates way too much pressure and over extracts.
Tried making a ristretto, it tasted good but the brewer started blowing o-rings.
>ping pong actually used a food grade pump
>rest of the plastic is probably not
>no heater
>powered by a single 14500
All in all, I overpaid for it, not worth $30+shipping
Might try modding it, add 3s 18650s and couple of heater carts for 3d printer under the water tank, 100Wish should be enough to boil 2-3oz of water. Plus some kind of modulation for that pump, because that's just stupid amount of pressure.
