I'm not saying it's inherently bad to eat at restaurants, but these places are seriously gay to work at.
>If you are a cook / chef you work shit hours for terrible pay relative to how hard you end up working
>If you are front of house you are the emotional whipping boy for management and bad customers alike
>Dishwashers are either criminals or Muslims, sometimes both
>There's at least one manager with anger issues who abuses all his employees in an attempt to get results

What kind of a psychopath / loser would actually enjoy working at one of these places?

while i agree with you overall it's not always the case. I worked for a family owned pizza joint for 5 years and went from dishboy to manager within 6 months due to a staff clean out and was able to staff the place with my personal friends. The owner was cheap and did some shady shit over the years but we just made up for it by drinking free beer. Not the best job i had, that was a video store - followed by a movie theater - but the pizza shop makes 3rd place.
But yea overall I agree by and large you need alcohol and drugs to work in one.

Getting abused by managers, drug addicted, or commie coworkers, and a painfully cynical environment are the hallmarks of the service industry.

last dishwasher I worked with was a cool Mexican guy who asked me what gnarly meant. Both managers were pretty cool and the servers sold me weed

Case in point, drug addicts galore. It's pretty depressing to be around all day long.

how fucking old are you?

I mean the cigarette smoking was about 100x as obvious and intrusive than whatever drugs the people did in their private lives. All that shit work for shitty customers and all we're pretending to care about is some private drug usage. This is ignoring many massive elephants in the room that OP addressed

I've been a cook for the last 4 years and as far as deadbeat jobs go it's by far the best I've had
>Shit hours
They're great if you're a shut in
>Shit pay
Meh, it's gotten a lot better lately, a lot of places where I'm at are giving line cooks over $20 an hour
>how hard you work
Just because you have to hustle doesn't make it hard, cooking is way easier on the body than spending 10 hours stacking pallets of soft drinks a day.
I don't think it's a job for everybody but I feel like people make it out to be a lot worse than it actually is.

been in one for 3 months now. i was hired for a new position they were trying out, but as the most "senior" new hire I train whoever they hire for my current job. we've already had 4 people go, two just quit, one just left during service, one was on drugs and was let go.
it's nice, even the lowest of my bosses has been with this same location for 5 years. one of the bartenders has been here for 20. i was interviewed by the proprietor who works hard every day to help the rest of us out.
lucked out, man. about 40 hours a week, plus tips, and only interacting with customers if i want to.

I left, but I'm still asking why so many people seem to opt for this line of work, or why so many more managers in this industry as opposed to others are abusive.
