British pastry store.
Sells sausage rolls, meat pies and various other hot food.
They do cold food and sweet pastries as well.

Places like it and sayers are popular because it's quick to get something, relatively cheap and you just get some warm food inside of you.

It's cheap, doesn't taste terrible, but quite unhealthy. Bongs have a lot of cultural / nostalgic attachment to it, but your average local baker will be far superior. Think of it as a working class version of starbucks or preta or something like that with an emphasis on food or a particularly british mcdonalds with pastries, pies, donuts and coffee instead of burgers, nuggets, fries and soda.

One of the things the brits to extremely well is meat wrapped in pastry.
greggs and other similar stores offer quick and hot pastry filled with all kinds of filling like steak, chicken and mushroom, cheese and onion.
Sausage rolls are a staple.
The also do breakfast sandwiches and soup.

Basically hot comfort food to deal with the cold and the shit weather.

Greggs is a little too salty and greasy for me
I prefer Sayers, although they are hit and miss whether you get the soggiest floppiest pastry ever, the hardest tooth chipping rock of a pastry or that sweetspot in between that hits just right.

>> No.18769632

Is it cheap?
In Australia we have a bakery chain that might be comparable to greggs but they offer more fancy artisan bread as well as your pasties, sausage rolls and meat pies and are a bit more pricey than your average local bakery shop.

>> No.18769642

>>18769632
Back when I lived in the UK in the 00s you could actually get decent loaves of bread and even decent soup at SOME greggs, but not all. Some just did the reheated pastries / pies and dessets with coffee. Also, yes, they are super fucking cheap for the UK. Pretty much every pie and dessert back then was under one pound, the sausage rolls I think were slightly under 50p. Some stuff like steak bakes were a little more expensive I think, but not much.

How does greggs do it? A pastry for £1 - £1.50 is a deal no matter what way you spin it but the craziest part is that they taste GOOD. They're cheap, and they taste good. It's insanity. Whenever you see a greggs you know you'll get a tasty pastry for cheap. What more could one ask for? How do they do it? Are they filling them with antifreeze? Do they keep slaves? Are they tax cheats? How can they afford to sell meat pastries at such a great price?
