the hubris of the executives who had developed a naive faith in the total power of their marketing. it wasn't a bad burger, but both the quarter pounder with cheese and big macs were invented by franchise owners and proved their appeal at the grassroots before the company rolled them out nationwide. in a way the arch deluxe was emblematic of an era wherein the elites became intoxicated with their imagine power to control the masses despite fast hurtling towards the progressive disaster that has been the 21st century so far

It was marketed as an "adult burger," so that should tell you everything you need to know about fast food customers.

the marketing was stupid
kids would act disgusted by the burger, then adults would look smug for being "wizened" enough to enjoy it
on a subconscious level, all of this is wrong for a food commercial
nobody wants to be perceived as eating something disgusting, or as smug, or as old
3 strikes you don't sell no burgers

the arch deluxe perverted this concept. a singular arch with a shadow suggests st. louis, which people hate.
