Look up The Food That Built America, Season 2 Ep 1 "Pizza Wars". tl;dr is two brothers wanted to start a food chain in the post-war boom. This was before Italian food was really done much in America and they took a lot of liberties when re-writing the italian recipe they had obtained.

The show is overall pretty cool, although a lot of the drama is falsified for ratings, the general idea of how a lot of food came to be is correct.
