I knew a body builder type guy who would do this with Hu Hot, that Mongolian grill place. He'd go for lunch and skip all the noodles and veggies and just eat bowl after bowl of pure protons. Said it was one of the easier ways to bulk up on lean meats.

Golden Corral and Old Country Buffet are US restaurants built on this model, and have been quite lucrative. If you've ever been to Vegas, almost all their restaurants are buffets, and overpriced, and the strip especially caters to fatasses, so they've obviously figured out how to not only profit but profit big.

For smaller US restaurants, lunch buffets have been a common Indian thing, which is great to get people into the restaurant who otherwise would have no idea what to order. I think it's similar to maybe how Chinese restaurants saw themselves decades prior, with the buffet useful again as a sampler. But while Indian buffets are local and can often be really good, I rarely see Chinese buffets anymore except with a crappy chain restaurant. Either way, as more obese white/black/spic people (or as SEA-Americans get more obese -- so anyone who's not an overseas immigrant basically) eat at Indian buffets the quality will undoubtedly go down, as the price still seems quite low.

It's lean athletes who are probably the scariest. I know we (a lightweight squad in a particular team) went to all-you-can-eat places specifically to have eating contests, and could fuck up anyone there (there were a couple heavyweight girls who competed with us too -- not fatties btw -- our weights and heights were about the same.)

Although the reason Kobayashi shattered all those records was because he showed the world how to separate the act of competitive eating from the act of eating, and none of us were really doing that, so we were hardly "competitive" in these contests.
