Holiday edition.

Monkey Shoulder makes a damn good Irish coffee with creme brulee notes.

What are some top 5 entry level bourbons under $30?
Prices vary from state to state but meaningfully less than maker's mark is a good metric. Current nominees are WT 101, Old Forester 100 and Four Roses. There's also an alt for shit that is at least straight bourbon and somewhat pleasant, Fighting Cock is in that list.

Scotch is from Scotland. Whisky usually denotes scotch styles but you also have Maker's Mark bourbon and the entire US legal code on alcohol which spells it whisky. Whiskey is an Irish spelling that became more common in the US with the migration, but if you read old letters, people use both interchangeably because spelling wasn't formalized until well after Webster's dictionary came out.

>>18690891
It started using unmalted barley because fuck English taxes and US Prohibition nearly killed the industry of over a thousand distilleries which ushered in the use of column stills. Pot stilled Irish is really good, though not usually as complex or funky as scotch, and shares a lot with American styles that aren't bourbon.

Can you actually guarantee any of that? Or that whatever cask they're using was good hooch? No. Still, the main difference is yeast, the cuts taken and how they are blended and distilled, the type of pot used and how it gets blended after aging. A mashbill doesn't amount to much on its own.

You try all of the other similar scotches. Including independent bottlings. Then you choose the best value among those. Then it gets discontinued and you start again (or it doesn't).
I'd probably go for the cask strength Smokehead (Caol Ila) over that. Or maybe the 6 isles (mostly Ledaig, cheap) or Compass Box Peat Monster (Mostly Caol Ila, a little cheaper than Laphroaig).

Or you can broaden your horizons a little and go for non Isla peat (like Glenfiddich, Loch Lomond, Benromach, Benriach, Tomintoul, Connemara, etc).
Or go for sherried peat like Longrow Red (or of course indie bottlings of any of your favourite Islays).

Of course have you tried QC or Lore? sherry? cairdeas? 3 oak? etc.

Looking to get my Dad a whiskey for christmas. He talks highly of Yellow Spot but I don't think I can find it in the store. Looking to spend no more than $150, does anyone have any recs? I don't really know much about his palette, he likes stuff like Jameson and JW Black. Something I can find in a typical liquor store would be great, thanks anons.

It's 2 shelves down from bulleit, usually a 30% price difference. ~$25 vs ~35 depending on regional monopoly. It nails a lot of quintessential bourbon flavors and doesn't skimp on the proof. Not the best but the personal favorite of many along with Old Forester 100 and a few other old names with low prices offering higher proof than the legal minimum.

>>18706028
Red Breast 12 or 16, Mularkey if you can find it in your areas--they do a black barrel irish style that's really good, Green Spot, one of the newer ones like the Irishman. You may have to hit up a few good stores in nicer areas, irish availability is shit, especially when you get into single pot or the newer brands and the old ones that have been revived.

Or take a chance on something local with either an age statement or some assurance that it's old enough to be worth the price and was actually made by the distillery in question. There's good stuff out there that no one knows or cares about because it doesn't say buffalo trace on the bottle and gets you no clout among redditors. Also a lot of shit, but that's why the mixer was invented in 1920.

If you live in a state monopoly, the website may have a good inventory system and save you some trips and phone calls.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like it very much but it wins a lot of blind tastings and isn't swill. If there is sipping whiskey, there is also drinking whiskey and you don't want too much going on when you're not really going to taste it after the fifth or seventh glass.

Help a retard out, I've been planning to buy my bf a nice bottle of scotch for his birthday but I know next to nothing about whisky. It's insanely popular but I prefer Ardbeg and Laphroaig. Old heads have said the quality on Lagavulin went down decades ago, I just wasn't impressed or feeling it. At least it tastes refined and expensive. Highland Park 12 is a good contrast to Islay with a different smoky character. I'd go with that one. Bruichladdich if you can find it, although the classic laddie is unpeated. Campeltown scotches are similar to Islay, it's right across the bay. There are a number of highland scotches with, comparatively, a hint of smoke that do interesting things. I remember Cragganmore tasting like it sounds, a dry and dusty attic with a fireplace burning in the floor below.

Most age statement scotches are good in some way, but some of the no age statement expressions are more interesting.

Sup anons. So for shits and giggles I decided I’m going to try something in the slightly more expensive range and am looking for recommendations. Budget is 200US. I generally prefer flavours on the stronger end of the spectrum (doesn’t matter if it’s fruity or peaty or whatever); so for example I’m quite fond of the Laphroaig 10. But I can appreciate something a little more laid back (just finished a bottle of the Glenfiddich 18 which I’m personally rating at about 85). Just picked up a Laphroaig 10 Sherry as well which I’m pretty excited to try. Recommendations appreciated; cheers anons!

It's awesome! Neat over ice well I really like to make Moscow mules with this in place of vodka.
They have an orange flavor. That's pretty good also and goes well in an old fashioned.

I just started trying to make an Old Fashioned and I can't seem to even approach the correct balance (I had it once at a bar for like $12 and it was obv perfect.) I've tried the following tonight: 1 tsp sugar muddled with 3 drops Peychaud's + 1 tsp water + 1 tray-size ice cube (made previous day, wrapped in plastic bag) + 2 oz Four Roses, with about 2.5 x 1 inch orange peel with no pith. The second attempt was about 1 tsp agave nectar + 4 drops Peychaud's + ice cube + orange peel + 1.75 oz Blue Nectar reposado tequila (good reviews for entry-tier sipper, but I'm not thrilled, though I found it at a great price.) I tried after making it adding a dash more bitters, adding a bit more syrup, adding a bit more water, and adding a bit more liquor -- nothing worked. I definitely didn't stir the first attempt enough at first but re-stirred after the first sip. It all just tastes unbalanced and separated, as if it's just a slightly-sweetened version of the base liquor. Peychaud's is recommended as a fine brand for this, and they say to use the same amount as Angostura, so I'm not sure that's it.

Any ideas? Tips?

You can't balance an Old Fashioned.

By nature it's an unbalanced cocktail.

Cocktails were practically invented and came to form covering up the taste of cheap hooch during prohibition. The exception is some old aperitifs and tiki drinks. Generally speaking. Recipes have been tweaked since then but you're either overpowering bad flavors or accentuating the one good thing a specific brand of cheap booze has going on. It's going to come down to what booze you use and the philosophy behind it. Old fashioneds tend to favor well bourbons with a certain flavor profile.

Because I wouldn't use such a sweet bourbon with sugar and orange. I'd use something woody and a little sour and bitter like Evan Williams or Old Forester. All you're going to get from four roses is a little cinnamon note on top. OF with sweet mixers will make the coffee notes pop.

redpill me on the proper way to make an old fashioned. I used a recipe that combined bourbon (I used bulleit), simple sugar, angostura bitters, and an orange rind. it was okay, but I probably didn't make it right. the rind certainly wasn't as fancy as pic related.

later I watched a movie where the a guy makes one of these by crushing a sugar cube in with the bitters, then adding the bourbon and rind. is that how you're supposed to make it?

>crushing a sugar cube in with the bitters
Only if you're not using ice. The invention and use of ice necessitated the use of simple syrup (or the sugar doesn't dissolve properly).
The nature of the Old Fashioned cocktail is a story of balance. The bourbon on its own has qualities - fire, sweetness, wood, flavors.
The point of adding things is to balance those. Water cuts the fire, bitters alters the sweetness, citrus tackles the wood, and the flavors are now more pointed and focused.
The most important part about the cocktail is finding the balance of those extra ingredients for the characteristics of the bourbon you're using.
The true "secret ingredient" which will set your stuff apart from others - a small dash of salt. Not to add "salty" but to trick the tongue into 'sharpening' all the flavors for you.

>redpill me on the proper way to make an old fashioned

there is no "proper" way. the cocktail started as literally just sugar, bitters, and rye. over time it evolved into a gazillion custom recipes bartenders adapted for their customers tastes, available ingredients, and cost control. that said, try this:

>demerara syrup, maple syrup, grenadine, or literally any other rich syrup that isn't just simple
>Peychaud's, 1812 old fashioned, Bitter Truth, or some other bitters that isn't Ango
>Rye whiskey, at least 100 proof. anything bottled in bond
>garnish with orange peel, cinnamon stick, smoldering rosemary, or some other tasty touch

experiment with those changes and find out what you like. Rye generally holds up better in an old fashioned because it's spicier and less smooth than bourbon. it also makes more sense to save your good bourbon for something less adulterated, but do whatever you like. Nowadays it's common to see old fashions made with añejos, Islays, and all sorts of spirits. And don't get me started on smoked old fashions...

wrong again, faggot. the old fashioned cocktail literally gets its name from the fact that it predates prohibition by at least half a century. most recipes were just attempts to round off harsh flavors first, and then accent good flavors. there's a literal shit ton of information you could learn from a simple google search, but you're obviously an out of touch boomer. go die.

Kilkerran has been getting distribution in the spots where Springbank isnt.

You might try Peated Ardnamurchan, but their stuff just started being bottled this year or late last year.

Machrie Moor is Peated Arran, but probably less available.

Ledaig has been really popular the last year or so, but availability seemes spotty.

You might have to rough it with something like Ballechin, Kilchoman or peated Bunnahabhain.

If your market has dusty bottles look for Jura Superstition, iirc that was peated and had a cult following of sorts.

Glenallachie has a new peated 4 yr bottle on the market.

Highland Park, Old Pultney and Scapa are all Northern Islands and do peated runs.

Talisker and Torabhaig are peated, but Talisker's reputation is iffy and Torabhaig is relatively new.
