The flavor of hot and sour soup comes from 3 main ingredients: chinese cooking wine, chinese vinegar, and white pepper. If everyone is using the same brands of wine and vinegar, its gonna taste the same.

grab the kikoman hot and sour soup mix, prepare it as instructed by the package, and then dump some chinese vinegar in there and it will taste exactly like cheap take out hot and sour. add in your own cornstarch slurry to make it thick. Go ahead and do all the other ingredients you like if you're really jonesing for it but dont want to pay 10$ for a cup of soup.

Bulk black ear fungus is cheap as fuck, at least, they use to be. Thats the distinctive black shit in there. Everything else is pretty obvious. Onions, tofu, whatever meat you have.
