I grew up in Hawaii and always remember this one particular exchange in like 9th grade where somebody said something about how shoyu on rice is the best thing ever, and then this girl (haole) chimed in and said, "yeah, plain rice with butter and soy sauce is great!" And half the class kind of looked at her with disgust and were like, "what kind of a monster adds butter to rice?" I'd never actually tried it because it just wasn't something people did, but it turned out it was pretty good. Still a very haole thing to do, but I'm also haole so whatever.

And it was fucking shitty. Like, really bad.
My mom bought two (forty fucking pounds, I might add) for the whole family. I'm the oldest of six. I had to eat this piece of shit trash bird and smile doing it.
My aunt's are in the corner "oh! well...it just taste different because it's free range!" No, aunty girl, it taste different because it tastes like shit.

Unsurprisingly, all of the sides were completely demolished. There was/is about 15 LB's of cooked "free range" turkey left over, stripped into bags.

Thank fucking god I don't live at home anymore.

The main takeaway from this is simple- modern farming methods are profitable for a reason; they produce the best product at the lowest cost.

Forget the soy. Just add sugar. Japs would do this regularly if they ever thought of it, but they're devoid of original ideas after millennia of regulations. They accept sugar egg noodles because the dutch snuck them in before said regulations, and plenty of sweet bean deserts because older than regulations. While this turn of events likely ended up keeping them relatively free of the beetus, they have lots of other issues, and still don't have many delicious butter/sugar/rice things that could have happened otherwise.

Alton Brown recommended heating the rice with butter until you get like a buttered popcorn smell, then cover with the proper amount of boiling water, reduce heat, cook for proper time.
Seems pretty good when I've done it.
