there's a story about this ad that basically, it was a diversity hire, college graduate who made this and the marketing team was forced to air this "ad" because it would be racist not to.

That's not what happened.

The real story is that there was this viral video in the U.K. with those creatures, singing about the moon (vid's called 'We Like the Moon'). A guy in his 40s at an ad agency was a huge fan of the video, and when Quizno's reached out to him, he pitched the idea of reworking that video, only to be about subs. He didn't expect them to actually go along with it, but they did, so he had to call the guy that made the moon video (and being from the U.K., he didn't even know what Quizno's was, but he was cool with it), and then they made the infamous Quizno's ads.

You don't know wtf you're talking about. This was corporate america's first attempt to grok memes, before Twitter even existed. It was also an IRL shitpost on national broadcast TV, back when that still mattered.

>> No.18608280

>>18608252
It was amazing. In a time when internet "culture" was largely unknown to mass media, to see the Moon rats from those retarded videos on some dude's random website, suddenly appear in mainstream media, worlds colliding. Only seeing a commercial featuring Strawberry Clock could have been more surreal. Early 2000s Quiznos was kinda based desu, we ate there at least once per week.

It was ahead of its time in the sense that a major chain appropriating this style was unheard of.
But the content itself was just derivative of popular flash videos at the time

>derivative of popular flash videos
Not "derivative", they literally hired the dude who made the original videos to use his lil characters. And this was ages before bullshit like r/memes and KnowYourMeme existed, even 4chan was obscure back then, before the emergence of normie social media. And I'm not using the term "normie" pejoratively but literally. For example, these ads aired in a time when Facebook was still restricted access and Twitter did not even exist. "Social media" wasn't even really a thing yet, and memes worked differently back then. Quiznos was waaaay ahead of the curve, and momentarily got more cool points than anything Youtube Corporate has ever (EVER) done.

You wanna talk some real geriatric shit, it blows the mind that Homestar never got turned into a cartoon on Nickelodeon or at least Adult Swim. Of course the interactivity would have been lost, and I'm glad that the Chaps didn't "sell out", but it's almost amazing that such a well-polished little property didn't get swooped up somehow. Anyway, just checking the website now, it's pretty cool that you can watch/play in mostly functional emulation now. (Generally speaking, Flash deserved to die, but it was never the same watching SBemails on Youtube without the hidden clickables.)

Also honorable mention for Weebl.

Same, even as a teenager I thought Homestarrunner was some proof of concept for the animators' project that would eventually be aired on TV. Flash cartoon series came too early to be absorbed by culture at large like most internet memes these days.

Neil is still around, he made an album of song mashups/re edits a couple years back which got popular with normies so he kind of stuck to that for a long time, nowadays sort of back to OG music. Last I heard he was the composer for some Disney cartoon show but I never watched it to confirm
