18549614 No.18549614 [Reply] [Original]

This is sort of a stupid boomers thread, but anyone can post with this experience. I grew up with parents who had no knowledge of cooking. Common dinners included: Whole chicken breast (frozen) thrown into crockpot without seasoning and a jar of salsa on top, meatloaf - which was a pack of ground beef shaped with an egg and no seasoning, then lastly, just basic shit like kraft mac, hamburger helper etc.

So I had to make all my food when I was as young as 12, and started making omlets and stuff like that. What are the worst meals your parents made? Are you like me and have no comfort food memories because your parents couldnt cook, so they just ate out all the time? It's very weird being 31 now and being the best cook in my entire family. I still get shit from 80+ year olds who dont know how to make their own spaghetti sauce and complain at me for using tomatoes from my garden to supplement canned plums etc.

>Whole chicken breast (frozen) thrown into crockpot without seasoning
My boomer father and stepmom did this but in an oven instead, and used shitty Pace salsa. It was horrific. We spent one summer when my parents were one of their diet kicks rotating between the chicken salsa dish and sliced chicken breast with onions and peppers served on the cheapest flour tortillas and again Pace salsa. It doesnt sound that bad but somehow they made it bad. Their cooking was all that kind of stuff except the random times we would get spaghetti or frozen stauffers lasagna, which they couldnt screw up too much because it was all premade.

For years I thought I didn't like rice because the only way my mother cooked it was baked in the oven where it mostly comes out very hard and crunchy. She was also pretty boring in that it would commonly be just baked potatoes with no seasoning or just boiled broccoli. Her rule was always she's made one thing for supper and isn't cooking more. If any of us didn't want to eat what she'd made we're free to go make a sandwich or whatever.

So in the end it worked out because between that motivation and old cooking shows then like wok with yan I taught myself cooking quite young and ended up very good at it.

Thankfully my mom was a really good cook and loved doing it. she was always cooking some tomato sauce for hours and making fresh pasta.
But I had a roommate who had parents that had no idea how to cook and neither did he. when he didn’t get fast food or frozen shit he would make nachos with a pack of ground beef and no seasoning, not even fucking salt. I had a pantry full of spices and grew herbs in the backyard and begged him to use some and he wouldn’t use any of it. it drove me fucking insane

My mom microwaved overly salted dollar store tortilla chips with craft singles to make "nachos" forgot about them in the microwave they got cold so she reheated them for to long burning the fake plastic cheese and partially melting the BPA plastic plate She microwave them on.

After that I couldn't eat cheese for 2 years I still can't get that taste or texture out of my mind.
As an unsuspecting kid, I knew something wasn't right but the nachos but ate them anyway because "mom would not serve me anything bad"

>> No.18550198

My mom could bake circles around most people but her foods were bland as shit. . Remember the average "taco night" was just ground beef without the seasoning packet because it was "too salty", and instead she added a tablespoon of salt to some frozen ground beef, some oregano from a 12 year old shaker and if she was feeling generous, some pre-ground pepper.

Hard to blame that entire generation, though. Boomers were actively eschewing everything they could have learned from their parents about everything in general, and unlike millennials onwards, didn't have access to the internet to learn how to cook. Gen-X had a chance since when they were moving out on their own, they had cooking TV available, but that shit was still not always about technique and alot more about flair. I do weep for whatever comes after zoomers though, because they're only learning about cooking from THE BUGER KING WHOPPER BUT I COOKED IT and tiktok cheese ejaculation people.

My mother would essentially boil supermarket steaks that were on sale, so you'd get a piece of well-done grey meat with chewy white gristle. Other atrocities were
>saltine crackers with ketchup
>Kraft cheese slice and mayo sandwiches - heavy on the mayo
>fried breaded pork, but the oil was too cold so they came out totally saturated
>turkey sandwiches with ice cream and Lays potato chips in it
>no seasonings in the cupboard

Most of the time it was just frozen dinners, take-out, and pre-made grocery items, but those steaks really stuck out to me because they were so bad, you wouldn't even feed it to an animal. I can't imagine giving that to my kids. And yes, she was/is obese.

She married up and never worked a day in her life then chose a divorce out of pure spite, so she was basically an emotionally rekt and regretful child raising a kid.

My grandma also lived with us (inventor of the ice cream potato chip turkey sandwich) and she was another divorced fatty. Poor choices everywhere. I forgot to mention we would have like 6 cats at once and they'd eat off of the plates in the living room with us when Chinese food was ordered

No, no that is horrible, and it sounds like hell. That is fucking terrible. Being forced to eat the same shit dish every day for over a month, having to pretend it isn't shit because you don't want to deal with their butthurt, dreading when it's time to eat every fucking day, hoping that it's going to be something different and then it turns out it's just the same exact fucking terrible food again and having your soul die a bit each day. No it's fucking horrible. I lived this, don't discount your experience. It was wrong and they should be ashamed. It's fucking torture. My mother did this to us, she made that same shit grey, soggy "sweet and sour" pork with canned pineapple and overcooked bell peppers for a month but this bitch thought she was "perfecting" the recipe. Dealing with that level of laziness is not okay, especially as a kid, because it seems endless and there is nothing you can do about it. I put it on the same level as torture.

I also have 4 lovely children. So I have to say l, as an experienced parent, I think you are disgusting and pathetic as you think feeding growing children this type of slop is acceptable, or that beating children will somehow make them into successful adults. I would never feed my kids the way anons have described here, or the way I was fed as a child. I have, in the past during the tough early days, went without food to make sure they have not just enough, but the best, and I would do it again gladly if I had to. Having experienced being beaten until I left home by the one person who is supposed to protect and care for you, and how horrifying that experience is, I will never hit my children, and anyone who does this is just guaranteed to have kids that want nothing to do with them when they are able to get away.

You mentality puts you firmly in the category of subhuman filth and I pity your children until the day they realize they can just cut you loose and be free of the burden that it is to have you as a parent. I hope they all move far away from you to states without filial piety laws and you're left to rot in some room alone for the cruelty you think is acceptable to inflict on them.
