>I don't have or use a gaiwan I usually just use a metal strainer and a cup.
That's all you need.
Anyway those white tea cakes are easy as hell, just break off a 4-5 gram chunk, put it in a mug and add boiling water, once its coil enough to drink flick out any bit of floating leaf or stem and drink, when you get a little more then halfway down add more boiling water, repeat as desired or untill the tea gets bland. Works for any white tea except for maybe silver needle.

Anyway for the other teas use either a second mug or a glass measuring cup or similar. For the lapsang, put 3-4 grams of tea in second mug, cover with boiling water, strain into your drinking mug after 3-5 minutes, you can probably brew the same leaves again, its up to you if you find the strength of the second cup worth it. Just use the same leaves again but double the brew time.
For the silver needle do the same thing but after boiling the water let it sit for 3-5 minutes to cool or shoot for around 80°c if you have a thermometer. Then brew

This is about 7.5 g of 2020 "good flavor great accomplishment" (i assume it sounds more elegant in Chinese) from Mengku Rongshi TF
Its pretty nice, good balance of tartness and sweetness. I dunno if most people would like it this young since it has a decent amount of bitterness but it works for me. Leaf is looking a little chopped because im brewing up some of the cake crumbs.

I agree. It's a rather pretty one with an interesting background. Comes from a small retired garden owner's lot in Xiding, allegedly having trees from 50-80 years in age. Kind of neat, knowing you're drinking an old man's tea from a small nook in Bada. It was only $8(+sh) for the 100g portion too, which I think is rather reasonable for leaf of this quality.

I think they sell full 200g cakes with possibly better material currently, but they cost more too. I'd buy one or two anyway; their Bada area finds are too good to ignore. I will always encourage anyone who plans to buy from Chawangshop to try one or two Bada area offerings.
>>18552052
>Its pretty nice, good balance of tartness and sweetness.
Almost looks like it with that nice peach color infusion. I can appreciate a young sheng, though I also tend to run most infusions lightly, so that probably helps curb the bitterness too. Where did you get it anyway? I think I've only seen cakes like that on Fullchea.
>Digging the chawang gaiwan too
Have another pic! I took the leaf out of my gaiwan for a moment to show a better view of the inside.
>Your tea sounds nice, those milky aspects are always enjoyable when i run into them.
It's one of the most balanced and complex whites I've had. Kind of sugary, nut milk, mint, (sweet) spinach, soft florals; just really fresh notes and basically 0 bitterness with a lovely milky texture. I haven't tried his newer whites, but if you ever buy from Chawangshop, definitely look into getting a red and white from Bada.

>I'll basically use it for everything and not fill it up all the way depending on what I'm drinking.
It may be worth noting that even if quite large, it will probably have the benefit of allowing your tea to open up more fully. Curious if you'd perceive a difference in the infusions as a result.

The dry leaf is fairly striking. Like a little silver-laden safari, up on the cake. It settles down to a flush of browns after being infused, but it's still fun. This one has a rather "jammy floral" aroma and flavor. Somewhat rich; it's nice.

People in the general mocked me when I tried buying some budget white cakes from Fullchea. Not all of them were especially great, but this one ended up being rather nice for the money, even if the material looks a little awkward. Discounted right now to boot, at a little over $14/357g. I'd say it's balance between a low floral and soft, jammy (blackberry?) quality, at least to my senses. Modest sweetness in general, subtle 'herbal' bitterness (slightly more if pushed), but not in a bad way. Shines best with light infusions in my opinion.

That's perfectly fine. There's no problem with taking breaks between infusions. If you intend to leave it for a while, I'd personally leave the gaiwan/teapot lid cracked or off to the side otherwise. Infusing too many times at once and leaving it will just result in your tea getting cold.

Trying shorter steeps with this ripe instead of pushing it hard like i usually do, nice result, sweeter and less intense then it is with long brews, still a pleasing amount of flavor. Its not coming off as weak or under brewed. This is 7.5 or 8.5 g in a 100ml gaiwan. i wasn't really paying attention when i weighed it out.
I still have no idea how people can eyball portions for compressed teas. i can usually get reasonably close when guessing and then checking on the scale but not close enough. If i eyeball i tend to get somewhere between 5 and 10 grams depending on compression and the size/shape of the pieces i chip off.

Although it reads down to 0.01 grams, the sensor is 10,000 divisions so I don't know what trickery it uses to show smaller precision than 0.04. Anyways, it's not accurate to that decimal but it is to 0.1g. Unless your scale costs more than $150 assume that the smallest decimal that it goes to is just bullshitting you. Lab scales used for very low weight have wind shields, so I don't think when a pocket/kitchen scale is showing you a stable measurement that's actual raw data from the sensor.

Got my new oldish stock glorious nippon teapot. Its very thick and heavy, pour is okay, lid fit is a bit rattley but the lid skirt is nice and long. I haven't had a chance to brew with it yet but the heat retention seems really good. I love the ash glaze from the kin, i guess this is called a sesame seed pattern because of the light colored dots.
Overall its pretty good but the lid fit is kind of a bummer and the construction isn't as precise as my modern yixing. That said it was also half the price of my modern yixing.
I will probably use it for roasted oolongs, old tea or anything else that benefits from brewing as hot as possible. Im interested to see how this Japanese clay performs taste wise.

I would say that they just tend to carry less cheaper teas than YS more so than them being expensive. YS has expensive teas too and Farmer-leaf occasionally stocks some really good 10-15¢/g tea but they often sell out. Note that Farmer-leaf also has "free" shipping which means they factor the cost of shipping into the prices. How do you get your tea leaves out of the pot if you're not using a strainer?
Is there some arcane magic technique I am missing?
Such a pain to fill it up with water and then turn it upside down.
And all the metal strainers that come with pots make the tea taste like shit after awhile.

Turn it upside down over the trash, shake it, you can use something like a chopstick or one of those little matcha spoons to remove most of the leaves then swirl a little water in the teapot and dump it out into the trash.
I don't really find it to be any more effort then washing out one of those metal brew basket inserts.

I don't measure at all. I put in a lot if dry and dilute down. However, the easiest option in my opinion is to use the material you already infused (hot) for your coldbrew, and roll it over a few sessions.
>Finish hot tea session, put leaf into jar, fill with water.
>Jar in refrigerator, leave overnight.
>Drink, leave a little, refill if needed to cover material.
>Repeat for several sessions until it becomes very full, then discard leaf away
>Refill with spent leaf from that day, restart cycle.
You can add a little bit of spare (non-infused) material if you want it to be more concentrated the next day too. Rolling cold infusions are just easy and convenient, not to mention very anti-waste (more for your money). So, I think every anon should consider giving it a try.

Anyone else like foraging their own teas from nature? Whenever I go /out/ I make sure to come back with a ziplock bag full of pine needles (preferably young Eastern White Pine with bright green needles). I also really enjoy dandelion root tea, though it's difficult to find places where you can forage dandelions without worrying about the soil being contaminated by pesticides and other city pollutants.

I've seen a lot of bad takes on pine tea, and a lot of people complaining about it being either tasteless, or tasting like turpentine. That's because they're doing it wrong. The trick to making good pine tea is to use fresh bright green needles from a younger tree, and to cut the ends off where they're all attached together. That part is filled with sap and will give your tea the turpentine taste. Then chop your needles up into half-inch sized pieces which allows more of the flavour, oils etc. to come out, and pack them into your steep ball. Make sure to rinse thoroughly in case a bird pissed on them or something. Proceed to pour boiling water into your cup and let steep for at least 20-25 minutes. I like to cover my cup with a plate or something so it doesn't cool down too much. It tastes great with a bit of raw honey, but also tastes good without any sweetener.

Also, as a general rule of thumb when foraging wild plants, do your research first. There are one or two toxic species of pine. The Eastern White Pine is very easy to identify if you know what you're looking for though, which makes it good for newbies.

Yes the caffeine hits differently i find it to be more stimulating than tea, it also feels good and some might even say you catch a bit off a buzz off of it, there are also number of claimed health benefits but generally people here aren't really into talking about health claims.
Its very easy to get into if you want to try it out. Just buy a bombilla, a bag of mate and use a mug to brew it, look up some videos on YouTube to see how its done. You can also just brew it like tea if you want to keep things simple.
