Am I getting bad papayas or is it simply not that great of a fruit? Out of the 5 I have bought over the summer, 4 were relatively flavorless or even mildly unpleasant. Then I got one that had a few sweet parts but it wasn’t evenly ripe and had little hard spots throughout the flesh.

I used to live in Hawaii and it's almost impossible to find decent papayas and guavas on the mainland. They just don't ship well and if you aren't eating them ripe off the tree they're pretty flavorless.

Not Anon, but I used to live in a tropical country with literal groves of the disgusting fuckers everywhere. Maybe it's cuz I'm white, but holy fuck do I hate most tropical fruits. There are a few exceptions, of course, but I really do hate the majority of them but none moreso than my major psychotic fucking hatred of papaya.
And my Indo family members would eat that shit and be happy as fuck for it, too. My cousin's wife would put chunks of ripe papaya in the blender with some evaporated milk, ice and sugar and blitz that shit. Es whatever the fuck. Forgot how to say papaya in Indonesian, but that shit is gross.
