This was during PEAK MadAve subliminal usage too...
Along with the Maccas steak sammie w/ Onion nugs.
Literal BILLIONS of dollars were poured into that. To think that they just abandoned it instead of refining it and simultaneously "Discrediting" it is Naive at best.
I have actually seen pic related in the wild.
If you can ever find them,(most have been scrubbed from the Intarrweebs,) read some of the process and training manuals for subliminal advertising--they are pretty fucking demonic.

Beer was just… beer. There wasn’t much to distinguish brands because they were all light lagers / pilsners. You can thank prohibition for killing off most local breweries, then you can thank Big Beer for stifling competition until the late 20th century.

Nope. Pisswater was the absolute standard from the 1920s until the late '80s, mid '90s around the globe (in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Austria alike) and in all layers of the population. That's how ABInbev and Heineken became the monsters they are today.

During those decades only a minority of people kept making/buying quality beer out of (religious) conviction rather than for economical reasons: mostly monks, cultural relics/obscure Michelin chefs (they really weren't all that famous back then) or resistance fighters during WWII (wheat used for beer couldn't be used to make bread for the Germans).

Until suddenly there was huge Anglo interest in those beers, thanks to Michael Jackson (not the singer of course) and people began supporting local breweries after a number of hostile takeovers with one very popular top tier brewery being burnt down (Hoegaarden, taken over by InBev) and another losing its quality: Liefmans Goudenband, used to be absolute top tier before they were taken over, could age well over 30 years and only became better over time until it finally caved in. Duvel-Moortgat "improved, optimized and rationalized" the production process and what you're left with is a dead beer, utterly worthless.

When the internet arrived Americans began crapping all over the beer market with their British IPAs, making everything worse for everybody. Especially quality craft brewers in the US and Canada.
