Double IPA is probably the most well-rounded beer style in existence. A lot of times the problem people have with regular IPAs is that they're too hop forward, and often don't have the malt backbone to balance out the bitterness. A double IPA done right fixes this, and they're typically super balanced. I like triples too, but they're big beers, made for sipping.

American pisswasser has a lot of direct ties to what was (and in many cases still is) legally considered "beer" by the RHG, and what became cutting edge when pale lagers/S. Pastorianus came into play.

While the IBU is being driven up by the dry hops, and probably counteracted by the FG (without the jargon: it's heavy, so it's got some sweetness to counteract the bitterness, and a decent chunk of that bitterness is more "on paper" than anything), all that Simcoe, Magnum, Citra and Mosaic is making me wary - all the haze and juice in the world cannot cover up the sins of a grapefruit orgy in a spruce grove.

It can go horribly wrong, but the blending of hops/oils can give more floral and fruity notes, especially considering some terpenes really don't survive a boiling. It can also balance out the vegetal bitterness from certain hops that would need a lot of sweeter malts to balance in a conventional brew.
As with any trend, a lot of it's shit - heavy on concept, trash in execution.

No it's not you retard, malt liquor is brewed by adding sugars to the brew to increase the alcohol content. It's possible to achieve high alcohol content in beer through traditional brewing, and then it is beer, not malt liquor, regardless of ABV.
