>retarded roommate opened cans with my carbon steel knife
>retarded guest soaped my cast iron
>retarded parents cleaned my non-stick with steel wool
>retarded sister cut frozen meat with my ceramic knife
>retarded neighbour didn't laid flat my sharpening stone before use
>retarded friend overheated my olive oil

Although some of them are excusable, but others made my blood rush. Is there anyone with relatives who just doesn't listen ?

Cast iron CAN be washed after every use with no problem. You just gotta dry them on the stove and apply some oil.

yeah I live in a house with a bunch of guys and they always do stuff like that. it's not even that they're retarded or evil, they just don't care.
good thing I have my own nice saucepan, skillet and knife, they can ruin the rest of the shit as much as they want.

My mom still will hold a hot pan under the tap and fill withr soapy water and place back on the stove. She does this with any and every pan she cooks in immediately after use, while hot, which will will shock and warp every pan in the house eventually. Nonstick certainly doesn't need soaking. But, there is NO fixing her.

My mom also never securely closes any lid on anything, from mayo to pickles to peanut butter. Expect every lid to come right off in your hand when you lift the container, and the contents to hit the floor. She's also unable to even halfway close Tupperware style sealing lids. I bought my parents those 4-sided snapware glass containers, which seem to indeed get closed properly. Until I did that, when I had butter at their house, it always tasted like fridge flavors. Yuck.

No, to have used steel wool at all means the pan actually was no longer nonstick and had something stuck to it. A new nonstick pan wipes clean in just water.

I catch flak for this but I personally believe the world's '''''food insecurity''''' and a lot of hunger issues stem greatly from a lack of knowledge surrounding food and cooking.
your sister cutting frozen meat and the olive oil burning is a prime example, but you should be able to communicate with your friends, guests, and family how to appropriately use your tools and ingredients if you personally believe you have greater knowledge on that particular subject and you're okay with others using them.

you don't communicate that seriousness with people because it's either not that serious, or you don't know that much about the subject as you believe. that's a hot take i know, you're welcome to stew on it.

About 10 years ago I decided in all aspects of my life to stop getting hot when people break something when they are legit trying to help. I've also come to peace with the fact that things break and often time people in your life will do it by accident.

This helps you be a lot less mad at people like your girlfriend, your friends, your parents, etc. In the end it's just stuff that gets consumed. Buy It For Life is just a meme to get people to spend 10x.

Just today I said I'm gonna make chilly cheese dogs and my mom comes back from work with the groceries. Except she forgets the shredded TexMex cheese mix. No matter how many times I tell her, no matter how many times I am reduced to shouting in anger by her incompetence, she always pulls this shit. So she goes out again but not to the grocery store like I said, but to the nearby convenience store. All they had is block swiss cheese so that's what she comes back with. So I had to make chilly cheese dogs... with swiss cheese.... that I had to grate myself. She had ONE job and she still fucks it up.
The absolute state of women. There's a reason the top chefs are men. Women can't be relied upon to cook, or even provide the ingredients.

Buy It For Life is a good philosophy to have, it means buying things that are not only hardy but can be repaired. The steel knife can be sharpened and the cast iron pan can be sanded down and re-seasoned, as two examples from OP's list. The non-stick pan is simply a non-BIFL item since it relies on a chemical coating that can't be replaced without buying a new one, but I agree with you that OP just has to let those things go and accept they were simple mistakes. Educate politely and carry on.

yeah it's attitudes like yours that result in you living in a 2 bedroom apartment filled with cool shit and no girlfriend lonely all the fucking time. plus you get a rep as the asshole who is uptight about their stuff.

I'm telling you just let it go into the ether. Good people who fuck your shit up by accident will just buy you a new one. If not, who cares it's just stuff.

I'd say if someone hears the instruction, "Don't use soap on the cast iron pan because it messes it up," and they just go ahead and use soap on it repeatedly after that THEN you have the right to get upset. But the first time they probably just didn't know.

You should be aware that some knowledge trigger an autism spike in people, including myself, so I understand that one of my few hobbies just don't fit with my surrounding. What make me angry is peoples lack of care for other's belongings, especially knowing that everything is insured, like using my knife when I have a can opener. Still, I'll probably laugh about it years later.

He (this is almost never a she) doesn't cook, the knife is a collector's item, you can smell the iron pan the moment you park in front of the premises, he's still using non-stick from the early '90s (even gran has scratch resistant, non-toxic now), sister obviously hates his bloody guts, his ceramic knife as well as his sharpening stone (chefs, fishermen and professional sharpeners have been using chemical sharpening for decades).

And here's the shocker: if you want to sear meat, mushrooms, root vegetables, you want to get your oil fuming hot. Olive oil starts smoking earlier (bad) but develops harmful substances way slower than other oils. That makes it perfect for a wok, which is one of the healthiest ways to prepare food, apart from steaming.
