Way back in the 2000's, I would wake up and go to the gas station convenience store every single day to fill my plastic 64oz cup. They had 85cent refills.

At some point I got scared I would become a diabetic if I kept drinking so much soda, so I forced myself to switch to drinking tea and coffee for my caffeine fix. I've hardly ever drank soda since. I'm curious if they still offer those discounted refill deals when you reuse their cup.

Anywhere that does free refills does it as a courtesy service, it's not some sort of default that you should expect. It's like Olive Gardens free unlimited breadsticks, it's nice that they do it but it doesn't mean you can walk into a Pizza Hut and demand free breadstick refills with your pizza.

We've had RFID labels since the late 90s/early 00s. It's a ridiculously mature and cheap technology by now.
Keep in mind that there doesn't need to be all that much intelligence in the cup. Just reply with a unique ID and that's it. The rest is handled by the soda fountain.
