After the midleton Distillery tour, I realize only the Irish figured out how to roast the groats underneath a roman bath floor, such that no smoke or peat flavors from the burning peat could permeate and poison the flavors with nasty peaty smoke.
Also, Ireland is deforested since Viking times, pretty much. The casks are recycled sherry casks from Spain, which by virtue of the age of the char underneath the burned barrel surfaces, the partially charred wood sugars combine with sherry flavors to make the whisky taste nice.

tl;dr, give up on the rest and go with a classic Jameson in your cocktails. Cigar smokers and people with destroyed palates are the only ones who like ashtray flavors in their whiskey, and have fooled themselves into thinking "single malt" is better than something blended with by an expert added from older vintages until the flavor is right.
