why does it have such a bad rap?

>> No.18173212

Man, lard is way cheaper than butter, or even vegetable oil, and it makes everything taste great. Biscuits, cornbread, beans, sauteed vegetables, seared meats... it's the shit. I feel like I found a cheat code after I started using it. It's the white man's MSG.

You're thinking of vegetable shortening. Lard is rendered pork fat.

Some vegan anon always comes in and says lard is bad because it has industrial uses, such as in machining and metal working where its used as a lubricant. This is like saying a diamond ring is worthless because they put diamonds in saw blades.

No it isn't. That's "shortening". In America the FDA requires it to be 100% pork fat to be labeled as lard.

Technically any solid fat is shortening (doughs that stretch, like pizza dough, are "long doughs", and doughs that don't, like biscuit dough, are "short doughs", hence shortening)

They proposed that a high-carb, low-fat diet was the healthiest option for humans, and funded a series of flawed studies to get it baked into the U.S. dietary guidelines.
It's why you see "7-12 servings of bread" on that food pyramid bullshit and "fat free food" plastered on junk food as an advertisement point.

It destroyed the concept of health for the baby boomers raised on it, who subsequently raised the generation leading the "Healthy at Every Size" movements.

Nice rebuttal. Put this article from 2014 (which ironically is about the parent company of hellmans accusing a vegan mayonaise brand of selling a product without eggyolk as mayonaise) through a translator.
https://www.businessinsider.nl/unilever-versus-bill-gates-hellmanns-voert-strijd-tegen-nep-mayonaise-513132/
4th paragraph:
"Hellmann's has also been for sale in the Netherlands since early 2014. Ironically, Hellmann's may not be called mayonnaise in the Netherlands, because it contains less oil than the definition used by the Dutch Commodities Act for mayonnaise: contains at least 70 percent fat and at least 5 percent egg yolk.”

Since then, they changed the recipe to 73% dat, and they can call their product mayonaise again (which they emphasise by branding it "Hellmanns REAL mayonaise").

Yeah, lots of people are paid lots of money to perpetuate the myth that animal fats cause heart attacks despite heart attacks literally not existing outside of human civilisation. No orca ever had a heart attack despite eating blubber-rich seals.

Here's how heart attacks happen:

1) The lipoproteins that your body uses to transport fat and cholesterol (see: important things) around your body are damaged by attempting to transport unsaturated fats (they're called unsaturated because they have chemical bonds that aren't fully saturated, thus are chemically unstable and can react with your body)
2) These damaged lipoproteins can no longer return to the liver because the protein they use as a keycard has been damaged
3) Eventually a macrophage gobbles the lipoprotein up, destroying it, at which point any fat/cholesterol in the lipoprotein is now inside the macrophage instead
4) The macrophage, now called a foam cell, finds its way into artery walls through the blood vessels on the outside of them

The idea that gunk INSIDE your arteries magically gets clogged in a nook or cranny is some of the most retarded pseudoscience in existence. There is no fat in your bloodstream. If your body needs to transport fat around, it puts it inside a lipoprotein first because fats and blood (see: water) don't get along very well.
