I gave this a shot recently. It was pretty amazing. when held up to the light it's actually a really deep red. Really rich and complex flavor, good alcohol warmth. It's a perfect fall/winter sipper beer.

Just thought I'd say that a monastary or something opened near me a few years ago. Never ran into a monk/friar until last summer when I saw one at a Lidl wearing the whole sackcloth get up and rope with the knots and everything.
I was surprised he was so young, couldn't have been older than 30, and he drove off in a nice car. Don't remember what.
If I see another, shall I ask him about beer?
And I just looked it up and the monastery is "temporarily closed." Covid?

it has a monk on the label and saint in the name but technically it's not a monk beer (anymore)
however its predecessor was a Westvleteren trappist brewed under license untill 1992 and when that was stopped it got renamed to st. bernardus without any change in the recipe
bit of an "ahktually", it's one of my favourite beers

Depends. The profit of trappists goes to the needs of the monks to sustain their lifestyle and all the rest goes to a good cause, it's one of the requirements to get that label.
So they're not exactly driven by greed even to this day.

Someone already posted Westvleteren, St. Bernardus and Rochefort 10, very nice guys.

St Bernardus isn't an abbey beer. West-Vleteren isn't that much more expensive than Rochefort.

The vast majority of Belgian abbey beers aren't abbey beers. Abbeys began noticing their beer became popular so they licensed their name to commercial breweries to do charity. Some breweries stick to the actual recipe(s) like Maredsous and Witkap Pater (which is the original abbey beer). Others are well known garbage, especially Leffe, which is nothing more than a leftover of Stella Artois brewing with E-numbers and sugary syrup added. That's why the Trappists (especially West-Vleteren) became anal about their beer, by the way.

>>18144683
That's nonsense, they've completely changed the recipe. The Vatican gave them a call and they had to. You've clearly never tasted West-Vleteren. They brew their beer with the same water and the same knowhow as West-Vleteren but they couldn't be more different. And yes you're right about their beer being very good.

>West-Vleteren isn't that much more expensive than Rochefort.

You mean retail or straight from the abbey? Because I can get Westvleteren for €12 per bottle (excluding shipping), and I can get Rochefort 10 for €3 in my local supermarket.

West-Vleteren always comes straight from the abbey. There's no retail. If it's retail it's not only 12€/bottle, it's also diluted beer or a different beer with a new label.

You're far better off with any of the other Trappists. Chimay are the biggest producers, their "Grande Réserve" is very good though, Rochefort is obviously very good, there's nothing wrong with a simple Westmalle: simple abbey life, simple Belgian life. No fuss, enjoy - we all end up on the same graveyard eventually. There's Trappists in the US, Austria, the Netherlands and Italy who make/made very respectable beer as well; they all had guidance from West-Vleteren, just like St-Bernardus. Their beer is/was as good. Achel (the Netherlands) is no longer a Trappist beer, for example.
