You can sometimes find a local roaster that does sell coffee ground to a specific size, like pu, ad, areo, fp, or cb. I hated my french press until I got a good grinder that can get the grounds consistently coarse enough. Before I was using my aeropress with preground coffee, using the inverted method and lots of agitation. Now I just use the hoffman method, since I can grind fine enough too.

I bought a used fellow ode of a retarded (onions)boy that fucked with it and destroyed the burrs. For almost half of the msrp I have an ode with ssp red's now. A kingrinder may be a manual grinder, but iirc they come with a bitt you can use a cordless drill on

I guess my main complaint is inconsistency. Sometimes I have a really damn good cup, and it makes me wonder what was different that time. It doesn't even seem to matter if the grounds are brand new.
The coffee sometimes leaves a mildewy aftertaste after I've finished it, at which point I usually deep-clean the coffeemaker, but it might also be my water, which is not great and also hard.

>What benefit would a French press have if it takes the same amount of time but more labor?

FP isn't the most elegant method, but i feel like it squeezes the most flavor out of otherwise mid-tier beans. also less plastic is involved which always helps with taste. if you're gonna get one, i suggest getting a stainless one, glass presses are destined to shatter.

An aeropress is also a relatively easy way to brew a consistently decent cup of coffee. You loose the oils that you would get from a french press, unless you buy an aftermarket mesh filter. yeh id say this place is pretty hostile for total newcomers but its fine once you kinda know what direction you want to go in/ have your bearings a bit more.
also there are a ton of newbie questions that have been asked 10000 times and have been answered better by others elsewhere many times before, so often you will just get pointed to where it has already been answered because thats better than some dipshit here who doesnt really know what they are talking about try and ramble out some half right answer that is ultimately impossible advice to actually follow in the real world.

Fell for the Melodrip meme and it’s honestly improved the quality of my pour overs significantly. I’m actually able to grind finer without getting a muddy coffee bed and I’m beginning to taste the fruity, berry notes of my light roasted Ethiopian with little to no bitterness and no overwhelming acidity/sourness either. The only issue of note is that even though the bed is no longer muddy, it also isn’t perfectly flat. It’s hard to tell from the pic but there seem to be some divots/grooves in the bed. My suspicion is that it might be a result of using the stirring rod that is included with the Melodripper. The instructions suggest to stir in a spiral motion following the bloom as well as the first pour. Is it possible I might receive better results by swirling the slurry instead a la Hoffmeme method and omitting the rod entirely? I suppose I should just try instead of asking but I’m curious to hear thoughts on the matter. I’m inclined to just keep following the instructions because so far it’s been producing delicious cups.

To actually try to answer your question, your bed isn't as muddy because the fines have a chance to settle down into the slurry. Because those fines are settling and not getting the shit kicked out of them by the kettle stream, you're dodging that sourness. Hoffmeme swirl will reduce the amount of fines in the bed with by sticking them up against the wall, which may be ideal depending on your grinder's distribution. I can't tell you if the results will be better, but they're going to be different for sure. Report back.

i'm looking for an espresso machine in the realms of 200€. it's gonna be my first espresso machine so i don't need deep autism tech.
currently looking at the delonghi dedica (new, 150€), gaggia brera (used, 180€), gaggia classic 2009 (used, 140-160€), lelit anna PL41EM (used, 230€) and the sage bambino plus (used, 150€). there's also a rancilio silvia for 320€ used but that's kinda pricey unless it's overwhelmingly better than the other options.
are any of these machines exceedingly good/bad for their price and are there any other options i should look at?

As far as flavors go, I don't mind getitng whole beans ground by the barista when I'm at Starbucks anyway, or using the grinder on the way out of Costco, but I've never had a home grinding that didn't make some over ground grinds, no matter the setting it's on.

>Pour over coffee is literally a percolation method
Automatic drip (stop saying "pour over" like a retard by the way, thanks) is not percolation. Automatic drip is what killed the percolator.
Percolators boil water which then goes up through a tube and extracts the grounds in repeated cycles.
Automatic drip doesn't boil, only extracts once, and uses disposable paper filters to let the extracted coffee go through as hot water is dripped on top of it.

Thoughts on the Sage Bambino and smart grinder pro as an entry level combo?
I'll drink way more milk drinks than pure espresso, so spending loads to chase perfection probably isn't worth it, especially for a beginner. And I'm not really looking for a new hobby, so the automatic milk steaming sounds pretty useful.

>In test after test, blind-tasters in the Serious Eats office were able to differentiate bloomed pourover coffee from un-bloomed, proving that one can indeed detect the effects of blooming. In almost all instances, tasters identified the bloomed coffee as richer, rounder, and fuller-flavored, while the un-bloomed samples tended to have a flatter, more hollow flavor, and at times tasted slightly more acidic. A more acidic flavor makes sense in un-bloomed coffee, as it's a sign of under-extraction—the CO2 was bubbling out while the water was trying to get in, so the water wasn't able to extract the beans' flavor as fully.

So I went on a trip to Europe and loved the espresso.
Bought a machine.
Got to work making decaf (at night) and every single shot was undrinkably sour, the whole bag. Even at the finest grind the grinder could do.

"Buy fresh beans from your local roaster", they said. What if, maybe, my local roaster is a retard who sucks at their job? Or maybe sugarcane process just sucks?

What do?
I think I'm going to start again tomorrow and go and buy some shit from Illy and Lavazza or other big brands like that. To me they scream "vending machine coffee" since that's where I saw their logo all day, but maybe they actually know what they're doing and the espresso will be good.

if you drank most of them from cafes then you most certainly drank store bought trash with no roast date like Lavazza
cafes dont give a shit about speciality coffee and probably have never even heard of it (except for the fancy expensive ones)
out of all the cafes i have been to in my town i always ask what beans they use and they always point to some massive bag of dark roasted trash that has been sitting on a shelf for 6 months.
