What dish did your family cook the most when you were growing up, /ck/? Being from Michigan, one of my earliest food memories and one of my favorite foods period is tater tot casserole. I don't care that it is cheap and brainless, I knew when mom broke out the casserole pan, we were in for good eats.

Yep, sums up the food and people who of the m*dwest. As for me, on the East Coast, I can’t think up one dish in particular my family cooked the most. We had access to quality meat and seafood year round so there was a lot of variety. A lot of stuff I enjoyed, of course, but factory farmed beef, canned veggies and frozen tater tot casseroles weren’t a regular occurence.

Here, I'll be kind and share my secret family recipe. This'll be a revelation, I know:

1 lb. ground beef
Bag of frozen tots
Can of cream of mushroom soup
Can of french cut green beans
Bag of shitty cheddar cheese
Worcestershire sauce

Brown the beef. Drain the fat (not all). Dump the drained can of green beans, soup, and Worcestershire into the beef and combine. In this order, layer the tots, the beef mixture, and the cheese (should be able to make two layers). Bake at 350 for 45-ish minutes and salt/pepper to taste. Congrats, you just made yourself some tasty eats that'll last at least three meals.

Yes, it's called competition. Imagine trying to be a local farmer trying to sell a much lower quantity for much more when the factory farm right next door will sell 10x that amount for the same price. The local farmer then ships his product to the coasts where there are fewer factory farms and they can make a bigger profit. Learn economics, copelord.

my mom would cut chicken breasts into quarters then put them in a cast iron pan and fill it with water and bake at 350f for 45min until all the water boiled off, she then would refill with water and bake for another 45min until that boiled off.
then salt and pepper

My mom used to make this curry ramen a lot. She'd add some stuff and throw like bok choy, peas and carrots and shit in there like a soup. Think it was my favorite meal growing up, liked it more than fast food. She still likes making noodle soups all the time.
When dad cooked he liked to make a big pot of oatmeal/rice porridge and crack open like five types of canned food. He was in the military for a few years so he was probably nostalgic for canned food.
Another thing he liked to do was just fry up a dozen eggs and have a big plate of it. I got in trouble once for stealing two right before dinner and fucking up his display. We ate a normal meal plus a big plate of fried eggs a lot.

Like she would give us boiled eggs as a snack but never bothered using cold water so I hated peeling them. After she figured out why she started doing it. I also didn't like cereal because I ate slow as hell while watching tv and it got soggy so she figured that out and gave me a smaller bowl and a refill. She also made fruit juice with a blender and I didn't like the seeds, so after thinking I was allergic to one of the fruits and swapping around I complained about a seed stuck in my teeth and she figured it out.

My dad grew up extremely, extremely poor. By the time he had kids he had elevated his life to lower middle class. He never got to eat steak as a kid, so he had my step mom cook steak all the time. Only problem was he was cheap and would buy the lowest quality cuts of steak. Then on top of that, my stepmom does not know how to cook, especially when it comes to steak. So multiple dinners a week we would eat very cheap very well done steaks coated heavily in cajun seasoning. To accompany our steak my stepmom would make mashed potatoes with skim milk and country crock butter, also they would dump a can of generic green beans in a bowl and microwave them. Those were not the worst dinners my stepmom made, just the one she made most often. I hated dinner at my dad's house so much as a kid.

My mother made a lot of different dishes, but one of the dishes I distinctly remember were "Ayvarpasta" - It was a cheap way to feed a family of 5 and one that tasted great too. Picrel looks similar to it:
Cook Penne normally. Meanwhile fry some bacon cubes in a pan, together with diced onion. Add Ayvar (which we bought in large glasses) and the almost cooked penne. Fry all together a little, add salt, pepper to taste, top either with goats cheese, grated cheese or those cows cheeses in brine that look like goats cheese but don't taste as good (but are cheaper).
Easy, cheap, quick. Everything you want when you have to cook for hungry children after a long workday. The quality of the dish is determined by the quality of the ayvar, there's better and worse ones out there. I remember the one we had back then being the best and modern versions not reaching the same quality, but that's probably nostalgia speaking.

Yeah even bad ayvar is still decent. And homemade is a whole different story. I made homemade a few times and it comes closest to what I remembered it tasting when I was a kid, but that's because as a kid when you were playing outside in the fields or forest all day and came home for food you were famished, so anything probably tasted amazing back then. I've also found that Ayvar from ethnic supermarkets tends to be better and cheaper, so whenever I am in one of those I grab a few jars, they keep long enough anyways.
>>18135270
It really was. I still make the dish sometimes, whenever I have some nostalgia for back then or I want a low effort meal that tastes good.
It tastes good even if you don't fry it correctly, but the dish becomes best when you fry it for a bit of time in the pan to have a more intense aroma. I'd definitely recommend people to give it a try.

my mum's dinner usually consisted of oven roasted or pan fried meats, with maybe a carb and some veges on the side.

roast chicken, lamb chops, pasta with mince and pasta sauce, roast potatoes, mash potatoes, minute steak, sausages, lasagna that you would just cook in the oven.

my mum was a shitty cook, and I was a picky eater, so dinner wasn't greak, lamb chops and roast chicken were pretty good.

basically

Picrel, it's a sauce made from eggplants and bell peppers. I connect it with eastern europe, and the best ones can usually be found in turkish/serbian/any balkan ethnic stores. But even normal supermarkets carry it more and more where I live (but often not quite as well made). Also really great to make yourself, a friend of mine's family is from serbia and they make it at home regularly. I had it homemade for the first time when I visited them and it was amazing.
>>18137840
It's pretty decent, give it a try sometime. I still make it these days as a comfort food.
>>18138450
Give it a try, it tastes great. There's usually at least a mild and a hot variant, but hot means just some slight spice, still works great as a sauce.
