When you get all your knowledge from stats and maps, you tend to ignore things like how the companies exploiting rural resources are registered in metropolitan areas. Similar to eastern Russia, northern Canada is resource rich and produces a fucktonne, but the wealth isn't kept local and thus it comes up as a poverty zone.
