I'm a construction electrician and this shit happens all the time. We moved into new offices/warehouse once and I was told to go around and replace the old light fixtures. When I got into the ceiling first, it was weird because the building was two stories tall but usually the area above the office front to a warehouse is dead space. The space above the ceiling was way too small, though.
We rented a lift and cut a hole through the upper half of the wall in the warehouse, and there was a whole finished office space that had just been sealed off and drywalled over. The lights were on, too, so we figured we had just accidentally cut into some other company's office like a bunch of retards.
When we finally got in touch with the landlord, it turned out the place was built with mezzanine office level and for whatever reason the previous tenants just demolished the staircase and boarded it over. We opened it up and used it as a storage area, but fuck that was weird to discover.

Not really though. The former wagies will starve long before the economy cares. The companies will hurt in the short-term but will finally put up the up-front cost of full automation. They will only need 1 well-paid wagie to run a completely automated burger warehouse and that's a lot cheaper than paying 10 minimum wagecucks. They will make more money in the long run and a small adjacent tech boom will also take place. Meanwhile, you, whose only experience is flipping burgers, will have been completely cut out of the work force.

If the landlord didn't pay them then the homeowner would, and at less cost since there is no middleman taking a cut. Landlords are leeches.

>> No.18051269

>>18050726
Landlords create liquidity in a generally non-elastic market. Renters are looking for a place to live that will allow them to leave in the near future with minimal pain. Purchasing a home makes that difficult. Additionally, landlords take care of the bureaucratic details involved with owning a home. Contracting the maintenance work (although it should be noted that many small time landlords actually do the maintenance themselves), handing the taxes and local regulations, outfitting the living space with access to utilities, etc.
I'm fairly enamored with Georgism, so I'm not here to say that landlords are an absolute good. Many are making money solely because they happen to own a scarce good that can't be produced, and slumlords often provide no societal value at all. But it's not accurate to say that landlords serve no purpose. In a perfect world the would be a frictionless transfer of goods between those who need them, but until we achieve that utopia you still need people willing to take on the role of asset rental.

>> No.18051572

I'm not sure I see how the cooperative model avoids having an individual or company getting paid to manage the system. You also still need an entity to own the homes, and those mortgage payments have to be included in the cost of belonging to the co-op. Does this actually end up being cheaper than renting while maintaining the same level of convenience?
Relatedly, all of the successful co-ops I know about have maintained their organization through a cohesive community. When members aren't actively engaged in group decision making and service, they don't last. Renters are, by nature, a transitory group, which seems like it is in natural opposition to a co-op. Add in all the bad renters who don't pay and then disappear leaving a mess as a cost the co-op has to shoulder.
I don't doubt that there are people for whom this would work, but I do doubt that those people are a majority of renters. But maybe I'm misunderstanding the mechanics

If well-contracted and properly vetting members, yes, it outshoots most private landholders and landholding corporations on both monthly cost and retained value.

That's right. It's a feedback loop- corporations offer jobs that won't last, which means people move to places they don't plan to stay, and those places adjust the model for harsher exploitation of those who intend to rent for shorter periods, and as a result their future clientele consists only of short-term renters.
"Bad renters" are either the result of socio-economic issues for which intervention is possible, or they are themselves a solvable demographic issue.
To fix the system would require dynamic top-down change, but that change is possible. Don't fall into thinking that softcore warlord shit is morally acceptable just because it gets results in the current anarcho-tyrannical wasteland.

A system that requires members to be vetted inherently loses out on the convenience factor. I can see how it could exist in parallel to the landlord system, but I don't think it negates their value. I'm also skeptical of systems that, in order to reach their full potential, require the resolution of our socio-economic woes and "solving demographic issues". Frankly, I think the cost of renting is a fairly miniscule issue in comparison.
Certainly, I would say that in society as it stands, landlords remain a necessary part of the housing market, even considering their most abusive practices.

Bu definition, a landlord has to charge a renter more than the renter would pay if they owned the same home. Otherwise landlords wouldn't make a profit. If you don't understand how a middleman increases cost, then there's really no conversation to be had here.

>> No.18053126

>>18053023
Rentals provide the convenience of being able to sign a lease for a set amount of time and knowing that if shit goes sideways with some part of the property while you're renting, it's not your responsibility to pay for it. Most people who aren't in a position to buy a property don't have the means to just eat a several thousand dollar repair cost up front if the HVAC just shits the bed or something for example. Renting, while generally more expensive overall than owning on a monthly basis, provides a level of protection from unexpected costs in addition to the convenience of being able to choose to relocate on relatively short notice without having to worry about trying to sell your home and find a new property to purchase that will meet all your needs, make sure it's prepared for move in, etc.

Landlords provide a service that's vital to a specific subset of the population, and the fact that you literally can't stop guzzling cum and now think communism is unironically a good idea is never going to change that.

people who move/travel a lot for work
people who expect to have families in the future don't want to commit to a 20/30-year mortgage until they're married or have their first child
people who just prefer apartments to houses

That's moronic. Their rent could be enlarging equity instead of funding a landlord. When your household expands you can sell your property while it's partially paid off and enlarge to a more suitable property.

>Set of stairs destroyed so no one can go into it
It looks to me like you have a case of the previous tenants believing the room was haunted. They boarded it up to make sure no one else can go up there again.
The second choice is that there was murder up there. The tenant or someone related had killed someone(s), cleaned the room of all of evidence , and decided to take no chances of being found out and erased the room from existence.

If boomers wouldnt sit on all housing, you could just buy that flat for 20k or whatever and be done with it instead of renting for 1/20 the price. The boomer menace is the reason rent is the only option. Otherwise you would simpy buy and sell to yet again buy a bigger for your family later on.

Rent is a parasitig system.

No, thats why your masters import the third world and make up new "eco" reulations to make it impossible to bu those older homes wthout ivesting hundreds f tousand of euroes. Evwn now, every older home has oil heating overe here. You have to remove and exchange the whole heating which is 20K minimum, more lik 30-40k. Just for the heating. Were not speaking insulation or other shit yet.

Its all by design. You will never own a house if you dont buy one now and _they_ will be happy.

Landlords are parasites hoarding wealth and capital. Every bit of land a landlord steals is land that could've been bought by a man to raise his family or build a small business or create a farm.
