Why does /ck/ hate tilapia so much? I get that it's basic but it's a pretty nice and cheap fish that gets the job done. If you put some effort into it it can come out great.

Is there any reason I can't eat these fuckers multiple times a week? Places seem to say "oh too much of ANY fish can hurt you" "tilapia has a crappier type of omega that isnt as good for you" but I'm so confused. As far as I know, tilapia is farmed so how could there be any mercury in it? And why would that omega be so bad? I can't find any definitive info.

Blackened tilapia tacos are bretty gud

No mercury.
Tilapia has omega 6 fatty acids in surprisingly high amounts. That's pretty much it.
Omega 6 increases risk of stroke, heart attack, blood clots and other health risks.
Tilapia is extremely easy to farm.

Only in your head. Take some meds.

You must be new here.
Not OP, but /ck/ used to routinely talk shit on tilapia as a garbage fish, claiming they're fed literal shit. Idk if it's true that they literally eat shit, but those are the things /ck/ used to say about it. Look it up in the archives.

I’m definitely not new here, hence I know better than to ask explanations for retarded shit this place has spouted at one time of another, especially when that shit is only the product of a couple dedicated autists and thus not “real”.
The few retards who cry about tilapia when it’s mentioned are just as retarded as the few retards who cry when rice cookers are mentioned.
Tilapia is fine and soy sauce won’t make you grow tits and want to suck dicks.

>Tilapia has omega 6 fatty acids in surprisingly high amounts.
Not really. Looking at a nutritional profile of tilapia, it seems to have almost 1/3 the amount of total PUFAs as salmon per gram. It has 3x more omega-6's and 3x less omega-3's, but the 3:6 ratio is still about 1:1 which is ideal, and the overall amount is nothing to be alarmed about (this is coming from someone who has taken the seed oil pill).

For reference, 1 tablespoon of soybean oil contains 23x more omega-6's than 100 grams of Tilapia.

I guess the reason people say Tilapia is unhealthy is because it's a fake farmed fish that eats garbage food pellets its whole life. But the same could be said for most salmon you buy at the grocery store.

That chart is comparing steamed tilapia to dried IE concentrated salmon and sardines. Is it still accurate when steamed salmon or sardines are used instead?

so is there a good fish that is excellent protein + no negatives or barely any negatives or are they all fucked in some way

Here's a different site using raw fish for both. It shows an even smaller difference in omega-6's.

Thanks for posting another chart but maybe I'm dumb cuz it seems like tilapia has almost 50% more omega 6 than does salmon and a far less favourable 6:3 ratio, things I knew already from looking it up a long while back.
Either way, I eat tilapia. I'm just trying to get all the facts in order if you know something I don't. Thanks again for posting both charts.

That's correct. It has a bit more omega-6's and significantly less omega-3's. But with such small total amounts, and with a ratio of 1:1, it's still has a perfectly healthy fatty acid profile and isn't something you should worry about. I'd be more worried about over-eating salmon, since overall PUFAs would be 3x higher.

Fair enough and thanks again.

Last time I cooked tilapia, I dipped fillets of it in chickpea batter and deepfried it for fish and chips. Actually, that's all I ever do with it, come to think of it.

All farmed fish is pretty gross because of the feed and antibiotics and whatnot. As for wild fish, basically look for smaller, younger fish. Brook trout, pickerel, hell even sunfish taste great if you have the patients to clean 5 at a time. It also highly depends on where the fish is caught. A pike from some small lake in northern Ontario will be way less contaminated than a pike from Lake Ontario.

>> No.17990881

They shit all over each other, and the farmers give them chemicals to transform all the fish into males so the fish in a farm pod can't breed new fish in the water that will make it so when they harvest them the fish will be all different sizes.
And they're bland.
Despite all this they're better than catfish. But they cost more than chicken so what's the point.
