I hear some say they quite like it and some the complete opposite. Either way dont forget to take>>17966864 with a big grain of salt as while, yes single malts are preferred by most but I like to have a few blends on hand to drink occasionally. They will make you appreciate single malts more once they all start to blend together as you get further down the rabbit hole.

Blends with a heavier peat profile go the extra mile. Nice that they are generally cheap, but truly one with too much grain or low quality edginess will probably put you off it, but if you have a fair amount single malts on hand you can easily use them in conjunction to stretch your buc or at the very least use it as a mixer for cocktails.

>>17966327

Am I supposed to be tasting anything here? It just tastes like ethanol to me. I've tried adding various amounts of water but it tastes like nothing.

I've previously tried Glenlivet 12 year, Ardbeg 10 year and Port Charlotte 10 year. All were great in their own ways. Hell even the small bottle of Johnie Walker I got was pretty nice, kind of flat tasting, but smooth and easy drinking.

This tastes like nothing to me. It's flat like the Johnnie Walker but not smooth or easy to drink. It's just kind of unpleasant. Kind of surprised that it's so highly regarded because honestly it's one of the worst scotches I've ever

Female Whisky drinker here. It’s funny buying a good single malt. I usually get asked who I’m buying it for, husband? Father? Brother? Surely it can’t be for yourself. Then when I tell it’s for me, I get a shocked look. They recover and decide to ‘play along’ with me. Then they start telling me lots of things I know I about Whisky.

It’s at this point, if I can be bothered, I go through their shelves and tell them all the ones I’ve tasted and why I like them or not. Which regions I prefer, big up Islay, and why I’m not a fan of Irish and 100% prefer Scottish.

Now is when I think they feel bad. Because they always offer me loads of samples. I can usually free taste like 4/5 different ones min on every visit.

Having said that met a really nice woman last time through the airport who was giving out Talisker samples. We had a great chat. She was awesome.

Now guys at bars when you order a single malt find you immediately intriguing. They watch you take a sip. I think they are waiting to see if you make a face. When you look pleased then they have their in to strike up a conversation.

I don’t know a lot of other female whisky drinkers but I wish I did. I can only go on so many old fashioned hunts with boys.

Ok so I just bought a full bottle of Glenlivet 15 (i had previously liked 12 so I took a chance) and an airplane bottle of Glenlivet 12 so I could do a comparison. Glenlivet 12 tastes just how I remember it, light, fruity, almond marzipan aftertaste, delicious, kind of "girly" if that makes sense. Glenlivet 15 is somehow richer but more subtle and has a cinnamon aftertaste. It's honestly fucking amazing. Both of these scotches have tons of flavor that I can pick up. Glenfiddich just tastes like cardboard mixed with rubbing alcohol. I'm honestly giving this shit away. It's awful. I still don't know what I'm supposed to be tasting here. Honestly I think the hateboner for 40% whiskies is unjustified. Sure, I'd rather have everything be cask strength, but you can still get a good deal of flavour out of certain 40% whiskies. It's not complex, but I enjoy Glenlivet 12 for what it is.

its justified because the ones that complain are the ones that have been drinking for years so they have the experience necessary to distinguish the worthy from the weak.

it's not even that it should be cask strength, but bottling at the bare minimum is a sign of quality being disregarded for maximum profit.

certainly you can come to appreciate it more if you connect it to a memory or something, but it's also something that is harder to appreciate because theres no crushing demand for it.

IMO only the Glenlivet 18 is any good. Whereas for Glenfiddich only the 15 is good.
Unless of course you can get one of their cask strength bottles.

I'd have to say that the guys protesting the loudest don't have that experience. And the people that do have that experience shouldn't be claiming 40% is trash, but rather that they tend to fall out of their top 100 the fastest so don't get much of their attention. It's apathy, not hatred.
Besides there are some older 40% original bottlings worth your attention, and some decent value picks if you start limiting by price.

FYI, I (>>17953147) am from the US. The only distillers from your list I've ever heard of are Balvenie, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila and Kilochman. I obviously need to try more Scotches.

I do enjoy my A'Bunadh, though (>>17948593). Let me ask you this, then. What other high proof (100+ proof) Scotches do you recommend?

Sorry, I tasted it again this morning and my mouth felt like having toffee instead of coffee, or maybe more accurately, like having liquid caramel on my tongue.

Alcohol is alcohol regardless of how you feel. Your false sense of superiority is hilarious though.

Hey uhh not from this board.
Looking for a gift for my uncle, he drinks bourbon. I have $150-$200 to spend on a bottle. I know nothing about spirits. Cheers

get 3 bottles in the $60 range. otherwise just hand him the cash and let them shop because tastes are hard to pin even for something as simple as bourbon.

does he drink hipster shit like Barrell or is he an old fogey that only enjoys Beam/Turkey?

It depends upon your location. If you're in the USA, bourbon doesn't get much better after the $60 range like this guy (>>17987638) said.

If you're not in the USA, you're on your own.

If you are in the USA, I'd say get 3 bottles of the stuff in my pic.
