Im looking for an espresso machine but unfortunately it just seems like what I am after doesnt really exist in the price bracket I looked at.

Essentially I wanted a good looking machine, 58mm portafilter, and controllable temperature. Adjustable pressure and pre infusion would be a benefit. Feels like there are some good machines for around £500 but all of them lack at least one of the elements. The Lelit Anna/Grace looks nice, has a temp control (although it looks questionable in some of the clips Ive seen) but has a 57mm portafilter. The Gaggia Classic and Rancilio seem to be classic machines but no temp control and dont look great.

Theres quite a void between £500 and £1000. At the £1000 mark it starts to become possible to get machines with all those features. Im just not sure if its really worth spending over £1000 on a machine and how much benefit I get for it being double the cost of some other decent machines.

yes i have done tests of my own and boiling the water first does make it taste better. also its actually faster. you can boil the water while you are grinding your beans.
well maybe if you have induction and have an induction compatible moka because induction boils water extremely fast and has very little wasted energy.
but on gas (which is preferable because of the literal infinite amount of temp control) boiling water from cold will take a long time and it can heat up your coffee/start extraction before you have reached optimal temp/pressure which obviously affects the flavor.

The Flair 58 might solve a lot of problems, but I think a lot of people are pairing the lower models with hand grinders and its 10+ minutes for 1 espresso. If you want any milk based drinks then you either spend more money, or go without it. If you are really budget constrained, its fine.

There are plenty of alternatives under £1000, and for incremental jumps you can get incremental improvements. Want a bigger portafilter than the £200 Signature - buy a Flair Pro 2 for £280. Want bigger again? Buy a Gaggia Classic for £450. Want a more powerful steam boiler? Buy the Rancilio Silvia. Want a pre installed PID then buy a Lelit Victoria for £750. The Flair definitely isnt the best thing under £1000.

Well if you think about it, instant is actually more coffee per coffee than straight beans since you only use like 2-3 grams of instant per cum versus 15g per 250mL of cum from beans so 250g of instant is equal to like 1500g of beans. I was working in a huge bar with a huge bistro out in the front. The boss had multiple of those throughout the country, 4 of them were in the city. So he wasn't really around to look at our hands and pockets. We were 4 bartenders at any given time too.

>Why even buy the cheap stuff and mix it?
Because if you just skim cash it's basically stealing, and at the end of the week there will be money/product missing during inventory.
In order to avoid that, you mix a little bit of the trash coffee(which you bought yourself)with a lot of the nice expensive one, you pocket the money worth of the cheap coffee.
People do not feel any difference in taste, there is no cash nor product missing. And since we sold hundreds of coffees a day, there was almost no way to get caught.

Get it? It's not stealing, you just sell a little bit of your own coffee.

Sometimes I did. However there were a shit ton of customers and a lot of work to be done so I didn't always have enough time to sneak more of it .

Occasionally there would be a party with some DJ at night, thats when the big money was because we did the same with alcohol.

As said previously, I think the Flairs are good machines and the 58 does address a lot of the issues that arise from the lower models. If you exclusively want espresso, happy to use a lever machine and don't mind the extra step of filling with water every time, the 58 seems like a good choice.

this. local roasters and baristas are fucking clueless. i bet the average schizo in this thread knows more about beans than those professional clowns.

>> No.17949389

>>17948246
The problem you might encounter is whilst you have dialed in your preferences for one particular type of coffee, that can change when you change coffee. The bean type, size, roast level all impact what settings you might choose. Even as you work through a single bag of beans you can expect grind setting to change.

Normally Super-Automatics don't give the level of control you need to fine tune your espresso to get the best shot.

Personally I wouldn't spend too much on beans to go in it. My experience is you can make some perfectly acceptable espresso or milk drinks but no point going for high end specialty coffee - lots of roasters have a much cheaper house blend that is fresh but not too pricey.

Kek. But in all seriousness 57mm is a pretty niche group size. Your basket and accessory options will be a bit limited. Not the same anon but the 57mm is probably a bigger deal breaker than temp control and aesthetics.

>> No.17954762

>>17954737
Lelit do offer a limited range of accessories in 57mm, but I didn't want to have it 6 months and be frustrated by a lack of options. The Victoria is 58mm.

The main downside to the Victoria (although seems to be the case with all the Lilets) is that it's a real bitch to get to the OPV. It ships with 11 bars as standard apparently. I have seen people control the pressure but opening the steam wand whilst pulling a shot though. Eventually I'll probably take it apart to turn it to 9 bar though

Switching to cold brew from instant has been a revelation. $40 USD for the pot + filter, $6 for a plastic jug to store it, $6 for a bag of pre-ground that makes over 3L worth of brew concentrate and it's way better than the instant crap I've had and doesn't include all the junk that the sachets have (and those cost $15 USD for 30 sachets).
I got a simple milk heater/frother and that is enough to warm up the combined milk + brew to temperature and it's obviously great for iced coffee.

That sounds like it would tank the temperature at the group head.

Believe there is a line just near the top of the brew chamber that is a fill to line. Either way you want it mostly full. Typically just stop at the point where it's almost enough to touch the plunger but not quite.
