What are some things your family did to stretch food. My grandparents would double the water when making instant ramen or other soups to make it go further. My grandfather would also dumpster dive at places like Aldi to get food that he considered still good. For his dogs he would go to the discount bread shop and buy all the products they were going to throw away for pennies. Then he would take the bread and mix it into a big bucket of wet and dry dog food slop to feed his twelve dogs.

I can't kill them fast enough. Foxes and coyotes like me I bet. Leave them where they drop.

My mom liked to buy the day old loaves at the Flowers outlet bakery, and pop them into the garage deep freezer for toast at a later date. I don't really enjoy those long white bread and goofy whole wheat cheap bread to this day. I want some artisan round sourdough, LOL.
My dad was the kind who always knew which stores had loss leader prices for eggs, bread, milk, rotisserie chicken, cereal, etc, those kind of prices and had no issues about walking into CVS only for 2 gallons of milk since it was $2/gal when it was $4 elsewhere. I am sure it was hundreds of dollars a year in savings.
My non-publix local store had a dented can and soon to expire cart near the entrance. Publix never used to have any Markdowns, since they sent their questionable stuff to food banks instead. My grandfather never failed to buy all the good finds there. You'd visit him and get the potato chips with the 15c red sticker and they'd be all broken inside or expired.

Aside from food. We always ate well, and ate out more than half the time. We had our favorite restaurants where we kids mostly got to order of the menu, or else it as family stype sharing of salad, and 2-3 mains.. We never even had to order water vs soda, but ther was a no appetizer rule. My Dad hated some kinda bossy neighbors next door who made sun tea outside on an old stump, and werekind of cheap and annoying, so often he'd made a comment about how they eat beans over there next door, and the kids all had heat rash in the Summer because they didn't run the A/C properly. It made us all stop our bitching....and then we'd go out for a sitdown Chinese combo meal.

Also there are far far too many deer and chucks. I shoot them as often as I can and they are still running rampant eating peoples crops and doing damage/spreading diseases. Deal with it. I accept your thanks for dealing with this nuisance.

Whistle pigs have to be taken in the winter and cooked long and slow to render out all the fat. Even still, it's pretty gamey. I made a skin head for my banjo out of ones hide a few years back. They were mostly eaten of necessity and not particularly desirable, though back in the old days it wouldn't be too uncommon to find someone who had eaten them often and developed a taste for them. I'd rather eat squirrel.

Like most rodents only eat them in the winter they have a fuckload of muscle parasites but as far as actual flavor goes make sure you trim as much fat as you can, and expect to get less meat than you think you are, because they're mostly skin and fat. The meat itself is greasy and gamey, but it goes good in a stew. Treat it like goat and it won't disappoint.
