just got in. some of them will give you a card with a number you write your name on, but you can write or tell them what you want. a sane name.. don't be Dicks McFucklenutts and they won't care. when you come back in you can give'em the number or show them the card before walking in. they use it to track how many unique people use it and how many are repeat users, but it's not like a membership card or anything, i think it's probably pretty fucking hard to get disqualified from a food bank. bring a box or reusable bags or something. you just go in, grab what you need, and head out. there will probably be limits on how many of a given thing you can take in a visit.. like "2 frozen meat, 8 vegetable, 3 microwave meals" but it's usually relatively generous for 1 person.
the people working there and the other poors with you are usually pretty non-judgemental. if you don't go in with rolexes and $500 raybans they'll probably just assume you hit hard times like everyone else visiting.

It's a common thing in the Caribbean and parts of Africa where bananas are more common than wheat. It's really vitamin-rich which, combined with the "foreign" factor can make you seem like a person spending MORE on groceries than the usual, even though he picked it up from a literal food bank.

Honestly that element of "you don't know what you're going to get until you're there" is something I enjoy about food banks. Walking out with a bag full of potatoes, habaneros, and hot Italian sausage makes for a fun drive home because you make yourself think of how you're going to combine these items, or can give you an item you'd never bought before and need to learn how to use it up. Great way to get out of your comfort zone if you're stuck in the rut of making sloppa every night.

For most it's a lifestyle choice. This isn't the 19th century anymore, there are tons of social programs to help the homeless on their feet in every first and second world country.
They simply prefer to loiter on the streets, do drugs or drink instead of working.

Try Olio app. It's a food sharing app where people volunteer to pick up food from supermarkets that hasn't sold that day, put up listings on the app and then you can just choose whatever you like and go pick it up. There is plenty of good stuff too; ready to eat sandwiches and wraps, produce, diary, frozen food and even meat. I know I sound like an ad but it saved my life when I moved out and was close to homelessness. I started requesting just a thing or two at first because I felt like I was taking food from the less unfortunate but they started giving me extras themselves, sometimes whole bags bc they told me half of the stuff still gets thrown away since not enough people pick it up.
