My grandfather was a fisherman back in the day. 2-man crew and not very lucrative.
He told me that they would boil hotdogs when they were out (usually sailed out for a week plus at a time) and thicken the 'dog water with a flour slurry. This was the sauce for the hotdogs instead of condiments.
